Crossroads of empires and the Hindu Kush
Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.
Population 43,844,111 (2025), up from 39,068,979 in 2020 — World Bank's own series: 39,068,979 (2020) -> 40,000,412 (2021) -> 40,578,842 (2022) -> 41,454,761 (2023) -> 42,647,492 (2024) -> 43,844,111 (2025), a rise of roughly 4.78 million (about 12.2%) over five years.
GDP US$17.78 billion (current US$, 2024) — World Bank's own series shows a sharp contraction and partial recovery: US$18.80bn (2019) -> US$19.96bn (2020) -> US$14.26bn (2021) -> US$14.50bn (2022) -> US$17.15bn (2023) -> US$17.78bn (2024). No 2025 GDP figure has yet been published by the World Bank.
GNI per capita US$390 (Atlas method, 2024); World Bank income classification: Low income — Series: US$520 (2019) -> US$490 (2020) -> US$380 (2021) -> US$370 (2022) -> US$370 (2023) -> US$390 (2024). World Bank lending category: IDA (International Development Association).
Consumer price inflation -6.60% (2024) - Afghanistan in deflation for a second straight year — Series: 2.30% (2019) -> 5.60% (2020) -> 5.13% (2021) -> 13.71% (2022) -> -4.64% (2023) -> -6.60% (2024). This is a World Bank macro series (Class B); it does not substitute for the Class A national CPI anchor required for u3_costs, which is deferred (see deferred[]).

Trade agreements (2): Afghanistan's formal trade agreements are minimal amid its current isolation, with cross-border trade to Pakistan, Iran, and Central Asia continuing informally; India's engagement is largely humanitarian aid and wheat shipments rather than any FTA.
Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~28 destinations. One of the world's weakest passports; visa required for almost everywhere.

Indian passport holders require an advance visa through the limited Afghan diplomatic channels currently operating, and current travel advisories strongly discourage tourism; other nationalities face similarly restrictive and case-by-case visa processes.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
Shared taxis and private hired cars with drivers are the standard way to get around Kabul and between cities, as public transit infrastructure remains basic.
Car vs taxi: Hired vehicles with trusted local drivers are the only practical option; self-driving or unfamiliar taxis are not advisable given security and infrastructure conditions.
Money: The Afghan afghani is the local currency; US dollars are widely used and often preferred for larger transactions, and cash is essential since card payments and ATMs are extremely limited.
SIM & data: Afghan Wireless, Roshan (now part of MTN Afghanistan), and Etisalat Afghanistan provide coverage in major cities; SIM registration requires a passport and connectivity is inconsistent outside urban centers.
Tipping: Not a strong tradition, but small tips for guides, drivers, or hotel staff are appreciated where services are used.
Etiquette: Dress conservatively and modestly at all times, women travelers should cover hair in public, and always ask before photographing people, especially women.
Food: Kabuli pulao (rice with lamb, carrots, and raisins), mantu dumplings, and fresh naan from local bakeries are staples of Afghan cuisine.
Say hello: Local language — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”
Security conditions remain serious and unpredictable across much of the country; most governments advise against all travel, and any visit requires careful, informed planning and local guidance.
For nomads: Taliban governance since 2021 has made nomad/remote work extremely difficult; infrastructure is unreliable; travel is inadvisable for most foreigners.
Education: International education options extremely limited; security and access remain major constraints.
Healthcare: Healthcare infrastructure severely damaged; private care limited to Kabul; serious cases often require evacuation.

43,844,111 as of 2025, according to the World Bank. That is up from 39,068,979 in 2020 - a rise of about 4.78 million (roughly 12%) over five years, despite the country's difficult economic conditions over the same period.
The World Bank classifies Afghanistan as a low-income country, with an IDA (International Development Association) lending category. GNI per capita (Atlas method) was US$390 in 2024, still well below its 2019 level of US$520 - it fell as low as US$370 in 2022 and 2023 before a modest uptick.
By World Bank figures, GDP fell sharply from US$19.96 billion in 2020 to US$14.26 billion in 2021, then partially recovered to US$17.78 billion by 2024 - still below its 2020 level. No 2025 GDP figure has been published by the World Bank yet.
Deflation, on the World Bank's most recent published figures: consumer prices fell 4.64% in 2023 and a further 6.60% in 2024, following a 13.71% inflation spike in 2022. This World Bank series (Class B) is cited for context only; it does not stand in for the official Class A national statistics needed for a formal cost-of-living anchor, which this profile does not currently carry for Afghanistan (see next question).
Because no official source for those specific figures could be reached this session, and this site ships only sourced figures. Afghanistan's National Statistics and Information Authority (nsia.gov.af) failed with a certificate error; India's Ministry of External Affairs country-relations index returned a 403 error on every attempt; and no working Embassy of India (Kabul) or Afghan Embassy (New Delhi) page could be located. Those blocks are marked deferred rather than filled with unsourced or outdated figures.
