Botswana is the world's leading diamond producer by value (through Debswana with De Beers), with beef and a growing tourism sector alongside prudent macro management.

Bloc — SACU: Botswana is a member of the Southern African Customs Union, the regional customs framework tracing to 1910 and widely regarded as the world's oldest continuously operating customs union. SACU's shared external-tariff structure anchors Botswana's trade relationship with South Africa and its other regional customs partners.

Product — Diamonds: Diamond mining, conducted through a longstanding joint-venture framework with international partners, is the defining structural pillar of the Botswanan economy and a geography-stable feature of its mineral endowment. Diamonds function as the clear anchor sector of Botswana's traditional export base.

Sector — Mining & Minerals: Beyond diamonds, Botswana's broader mining sector includes copper, nickel and coal extraction, reflecting the country's mineral-rich geology across the Kalahari basin. This diversified extractive framework anchors a principal structural sector alongside the diamond-dominated export base.

Future vector — Economic Diversification & AfCFTA: Botswana's AfCFTA signatory status frames a future-vector theme centred on diversifying beyond diamond-dependent trade through continental tariff liberalisation and regional value-addition in mineral processing and beneficiation. This diversification theme, alongside financial-services growth, anchors the country's longer-term economic trajectory.

Bloc — SADC: Botswana is a founding member of the Southern African Development Community, and Gaborone hosts its secretariat.

SADC's own secretariat records that Botswana, together with eight other countries, formed the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference in Lusaka, Zambia, in 1980, and that the SADC headquarters are situated in the Botswana capital, Gaborone.

This is a different instrument from SACU, which the page already covers, and the two should not be read as one. SACU is a customs union with a shared external tariff and five members; SADC is a wider development and integration community. Botswana sits inside both, and its tariff numbers come from the first while its regional policy is negotiated in the second.

India implication: For Indian firms and for the Indian mission, Gaborone is not only a national capital but the regional-policy address for southern Africa. India's engagement with SADC as a bloc is transacted in the same city where the High Commission already sits — a rare case where the bilateral post and the regional secretariat share a postcode.

Outlook: Dual SACU–SADC membership keeps Botswana's applied tariffs tied to the customs union while its integration agenda is set regionally. Importers should keep watching the customs union, not the community, for the numbers that change landed cost.

Product — where the diamonds actually go: diamonds were 59.4 percent of exports in April 2026, and India was the fourth-largest destination.

Statistics Botswana's International Merchandise Trade Statistics for April 2026, published in June 2026, put diamonds at 59.4 percent of total exports. Export earnings rose 50.0 percent that month — P1,969.6 million — from a revised March figure of P3,941.9 million to P5,911.4 million, while imports were P8,219.3 million. Botswana ran a goods deficit in April even with exports up by half.

By destination the split was Belgium 21.1 percent, the UAE 19.0 percent, China 15.7 percent, India 11.7 percent, South Africa 10.9 percent and Australia 10.5 percent. On the import side South Africa dominated at 44.7 percent, followed by Italy at 11.4 percent, Namibia at 10.5 percent, India at 5.4 percent and China at 5.2 percent.

India implication: The page already notes Surat's dependence on Botswana rough. The destination split puts a number on it — just under an eighth of Botswana's export value went directly to India in April 2026. But the direct share understates the real flow, because Antwerp and Dubai, the first and second destinations, are trading hubs through which a great deal more Botswana rough reaches Indian cutters indirectly.

Outlook: Read any single month's destination shares as a snapshot of a volatile series rather than a trend. The value that moves is the diamond price and the trading-hub routing, not Botswana's underlying production geography.

The High Commission of India in Gaborone publishes the bilateral series in US$ million: FY 2020-21 total 634.40; FY 2021-22 806.81; FY 2022-23 631.05; FY 2023-24 436.04; FY 2024-25 506.34. In FY 2024-25 India's exports were 173.44 and imports from Botswana 332.90. For FY 2025-26 the first months on record — March to September 2025 — show 64.04 in exports against 205.37 in imports, a total of 269.41.

The commission describes India's exports to Botswana as "a mix of pharmaceuticals, machinery, iron & steel, electrical equipment in addition to precious stones such as diamonds", with rough diamonds the dominant flow in the other direction. It puts the Indian community at approximately 10,000 Indian nationals and persons of Indian origin.

India implication: This is a diamond-shaped relationship, and the deficit is structural rather than a policy failure: India buys rough and sells pharmaceuticals and machinery. The FY 2021-22 peak and the FY 2023-24 trough track the rough-diamond cycle, not the state of bilateral diplomacy, so read the series as a commodity chart.

Outlook: FY 2024-25 recovered from the FY 2023-24 low without regaining the FY 2021-22 level. The line will keep tracking diamond demand until beneficiation at home or non-diamond exports change the mix — which is exactly the diversification bet the page's Future vector block describes.

Future vector — inflation above target against a crawling pula: the near-term macro squeeze.

Statistics Botswana recorded annual inflation of 9.4 percent in July 2026, down from 10.7 percent in June but well above the Bank of Botswana's 3–6 percent medium-term objective range. Transport alone contributed 5.2 percentage points of that annual rate.

The Bank of Botswana's Monetary Policy Statement of 25 February 2026 keeps the annual downward rate of crawl at 2.76 percent, with the Pula basket weighted 50 percent South African rand and 50 percent SDR. A managed downward crawl, plus an import basket in which South Africa supplied 44.7 percent of April 2026 imports, is the squeeze in one sentence: imported prices arrive from one economy, and the currency is being walked down against it by design.

The real economy is not the weak point. Real GDP grew 3.5 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2026 after a 0.3 percent decline a year earlier, with Diamond Traders up 60.5 percent against a 35.4 percent fall in the same quarter of 2025.

India implication: For Indian exporters of pharmaceuticals, machinery and steel, a 2.76 percent annual crawl is a predictable one-way pricing headwind — announced in advance, not a surprise devaluation. Price pula contracts with the crawl assumed, or invoice in dollars and expect the buyer to argue about it; either way the number is public before the year starts.

Outlook: The rate of crawl is reset annually and was left unchanged for 2026. Watch the February statement and the monthly CPI release together: an inflation print returning inside the 3–6 band is the signal the squeeze is easing, and it will show up before the crawl changes.
