Rhythms of nature and vibrant culture
Brazil and India have leaned hard into their BRICS partnership through 2025-2026, coordinating on de-dollarization proposals and Global South trade positioning even as both governments stress these aren't aimed at any single country. The India-Mercosur Preferential Trade Agreement review, long stalled, has gained fresh momentum as India seeks deeper access for pharma and IT services in exchange for opening further to Brazilian soy, sugar and ethanol. Brazil's push to expand ethanol and biofuel exports dovetails with India's own biofuel-blending targets, giving the relationship a distinctly green-energy edge this cycle.
Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.
Population 212,812,405 (2025)

Visa-free/eVisa up to 90 days for many; varies by nationality
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: No · Digital-nomad visa: VITEM XIV Digital Nomad Visa
When the requirement applies: Indian ordinary-passport holders
Source freshness: No Brazilian government visa page was successfully fetched this session -- gov.br/mre returned a reCAPTCHA wall on every attempt (embassy New Delhi visa page, two press-release pages, the English /subjects/visas page, and a consulate's visa-exempt-country list). The one Brazil-side visa instrument fetched successfully -- the 2004 diplomatic/official/service passport exemption -- remains live on mea.gov.in but covers a narrower population than ordinary travellers.

Flights for long distances; metros in big cities; buses and rideshare widely used.
Car vs taxi: Rent for coastal road trips; use Uber/99 in cities over street taxis.
Money: Cards in cities; cash for small towns; ATMs common — watch for skimming.
SIM & data: eSIMs avoid the CPF hassle; local SIMs need a CPF tax ID (tricky for tourists).
Tipping: A 10% service charge is often included; extra is appreciated, not required.
Etiquette: Greetings are physical (kisses, hugs); punctuality is relaxed.
Food: Try feijoada, pão de queijo and churrasco; drink bottled water.
Say hello: Portuguese — “Olá” · thanks “Obrigado/a” · how much? “Quanto custa isso?”
Crime varies by area; stay alert in Rio and São Paulo, avoid flashing valuables.
For nomads: Largest nomad community in South America; major hubs in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Bahia with excellent infrastructure.
Education: Expensive for international schools; Portuguese courses widely available at moderate rates.
Healthcare: Modern healthcare in São Paulo and Rio; private sector pricier than neighboring countries.
Prices: IPCA up 4.44% in the 12 months to July 2026 (+0.07% in July alone), driven by a 3.09% jump in residential electricity against a 0.67% fall in food and beverages
Neighbour comparison: Same-month official prints put Brazil's IPCA at 4.44% for the 12 months to July 2026 (IBGE) against Argentina's IPC at 33.8% year-on-year for the same month (INDEC) -- roughly an eight-to-one inflation gap between South America's two largest economies. Argentina's own July print (2.1% month-on-month) shows disinflation still working through a much higher base, but for Indian firms and workers comparing the two markets today, Brazil is currently the far more price-stable of the pair.

Visa-free/eVisa up to 90 days for many; varies by nationality
Brazil uses the Brazilian real (BRL). Capital: Brasília.
Mercosur founding member, multiple bilateral agreements.
Crime varies by area; stay alert in Rio and São Paulo, avoid flashing valuables.
Officially stated bilateral trade was US$12.20 billion in FY2024-25: India shipped US$6.77 billion (petroleum products, agro-chemicals, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods), Brazil shipped back US$5.43 billion (crude oil, soya oil, gold, raw sugar, cotton, iron ore, chemicals). Indian investment in Brazil exceeds US$6 billion, including roughly US$3.5 billion by state-owned OVL and BPRL in Brazil's upstream oil sector; Brazilian investment in India runs about US$1 billion. Around 4,000 Indians live in Brazil, mostly in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Manaus.
Brazil's IPCA rose 4.44% in the 12 months to July 2026 (+0.07% in July alone, IBGE) -- a mild print by regional history. Argentina's IPC over the same 12 months ran 33.8% (2.1% in July alone, INDEC), nearly eight times Brazil's rate. Of South America's two largest economies, Brazil is currently the far more price-stable.
Not confirmed via an accessible official Brazilian government page this session -- every gov.br/mre visa page returned a bot-verification wall rather than content. What is confirmed: a 2004 bilateral agreement exempts only Indian diplomatic, official and service passport holders, for stays up to 90 days; it says nothing about ordinary passports. As of PM Modi's July 2025 visit the two governments were still in active talks on 'visa liberalisation for Indian businessmen and tourists' (Government of India readout), implying a standing requirement was in force at that time. Fee, duration and application instrument for ordinary passports remain deferred pending a working official source.
Brazil's GDP was approximately US$2.28 trillion in 2025 and its population 212.8 million, against a GNI per capita of US$10,550 (Atlas method) -- placing it in the World Bank's upper-middle-income group.
The two countries run a formal defence track dating to a 2003 agreement (ratified 2006) that created a Joint Defence Committee -- 134 officers have trained across both countries, and a new 2+2 Political-Military dialogue held its first round in 2024. They also sit together in BRICS, IBSA, the G20, G-4, the International Solar Alliance, the Global Biofuel Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
Both governments have restated the same target twice in eight months: bilateral trade above US$20 billion within five years, up from a US$12.2 billion base -- first from PM Modi during his July 2025 Brasilia visit, then from President Lula during his February 2026 New Delhi visit, alongside a declared push (October 2025) to deepen the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement within roughly a year.
