Sahara, Sahel and the shrinking lake
Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.
Income per head: GNI per capita, Atlas method: US$970 (2025), after US$930 in 2024 and US$910 in 2023.
Income group: The World Bank classifies Chad as Low income, region Sub-Saharan Africa, lending category IDA.
Economy size: GDP (current US$): US$21,472,835,225.43 — about US$21.47 billion (2025). That is seven times the Central African Republic's economy next door, on roughly four times the people.
Access to electricity: 13.4% of the population had access to electricity in 2024 — up from 12% in 2023 and 11.7% in 2022. The page says coworking is non-existent and N'Djamena internet is basic; this is the number underneath that sentence.
Sourced notes — every figure above, with where it was read and when.
Trade agreements (4): Chad trades through AfCFTA, CEMAC, and the Arab League framework; there is no India–Chad FTA, and bilateral trade remains limited, mostly linked to oil.
Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~38 destinations. Very limited; African Union & regional access only.
India × Chad hub ↗ All countries factsheet
Indian passport holders can obtain an e-visa online before travel, which has simplified entry considerably compared to embassy-only processing in the past.
e-Visa: not established — no reachable Chadian government e-visa portal was found, and Chad's mission in India describes an in-person application · Visa on arrival: not published
The official application route: Chad's e-visa portal describes itself as the "Plateforme officielle de demande de visa d'entrée au Tchad" — the official platform for applying for an entry visa to Chad — and names D.E.I Tchad, the Direction de l'Émigration et de l'Immigration, with an e-visa sub-directorate, as the body behind it. Applications are accepted up to 90 days ahead of travel and the portal asks for them "au moins sept (7) jours avant votre date d'entrée" — at least seven days before your entry date.
India is not on the exemption list: The portal publishes the nationalities that do not need a visa. There are 23 of them: Barbade, Bénin, Bermudes, Cameroun, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Dominique, Gabon, Gambie, Guinée-Équatoriale, Île Maurice, Îles Cook, Malaisie, Mali, Micronésie, Niger, Nigéria, République centrafricaine, Rwanda, Saint-Vincent-et-les-Grenadines, Singapour, Surinam and Togo. India is not among them — which is what makes the page's e-visa instruction the operative one for an Indian traveller rather than a redundant one.
What to have ready: The portal asks for the passport biographical page and proof of yellow-fever vaccination, plus documents specific to the visa category applied for — employment contract, hotel reservation, letter of invitation, flight ticket, proof of funds. The yellow-fever requirement is the one worth flagging on an Indian itinerary, because the certificate has to be in hand before the application rather than at the airport.
Prices changed in May 2026, and the schedule was not served: The portal's most recent notice, dated 11 May 2026, is headed "NOUVELLES TARIFICATIONS DES VISAS EN RÉPUBLIQUE DU TCHAD" — new visa pricing in the Republic of Chad. Only the headline rendered; the notice body, and with it the fee schedule and the visa categories and durations, did not. No fee figure is written on this page for that reason. Budget for the visa, then confirm the amount on the portal before applying.
What India's own ministry does not say: Chad appears in none of the three tables in the MEA's Visa Facility for Indian Nationals — not visa-free, not visa on arrival, not e-Visa. That is an absence, not a denial: the MEA table was compiled as on 3 March 2025 and carries the ministry's statement that it is drawn from public and external sources and is not warranted for accuracy. Chad's own portal is the more current record here.

Shared bush taxis and minibuses connect N'Djamena with other towns, while shared taxis and motorbike-taxis serve the capital; app-based ride-hailing is not established, so hotels typically arrange transport.
Car vs taxi: Self-driving is not recommended outside N'Djamena given road conditions and security zones; hired drivers familiar with current conditions are the safer choice for any regional travel.
Money: Cash (Central African CFA franc) is necessary for nearly all transactions; cards are accepted only at a few N'Djamena hotels, so cash withdrawals or reserves are essential.
SIM & data: Airtel Chad and Moov Africa Tchad are the two main carriers, with coverage concentrated in N'Djamena and larger towns; a local SIM is straightforward to buy but eSIM support is limited.
Tipping: Not deeply established, but small tips for restaurant staff and guides in N'Djamena are appreciated, and rounding up taxi fares is fine.
Etiquette: Greetings and hospitality customs are important before any interaction, and modest dress is expected, particularly given the country's mixed Muslim and Christian population.
Food: Try daraba (okra and meat stew) and boule (millet dough) with sauce; stick to bottled or treated water.
Say hello: French — “Bonjour” · thanks “Merci” · how much? “C'est combien?”
Chad faces security challenges in border regions near Libya, Sudan, and the Lake Chad Basin, so travel is best limited to more stable central areas, with current advisories checked before any visit.
For nomads: Minimal nomad infrastructure; N'Djamena has basic internet; coworking non-existent.
Education: Few international options; French and Arabic dominant.
Healthcare: Minimal infrastructure; serious cases require travel.
What the money is pegged to: The page is right that Chad is a cash economy; the useful addition is that the cash is pegged. The Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale issues the Central African CFA franc for six member states — Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Chad — at a fixed parity of 655.957 XAF to the euro. BEAC's indicative exchange rates were last updated 18/08/2026. Convert once, in euros, and the arithmetic holds.
What money costs: BEAC's policy rate, the taux d'intérêt des appels d'offres, is 4.50%. N'Djamena does not set it — it is a single regional rate for the whole CEMAC zone, so local credit terms an Indian firm is quoted in Chad are priced off a decision taken for six countries at once.
What prices are doing — and this one is unusual: Chad's consumer prices fell in 2025: inflation was −3.91%, after +8.90% in 2024 and +10.84% in 2023. That is a genuine deflation year following two hard inflationary ones, and it is the single most important caveat on any older price guidance for N'Djamena. Anything quoted from 2023 or 2024 was set against a very different price level in both directions.
Compared with Cameroon: Cameroon is the comparison that earns its place, because for a landlocked country it is also the route to the sea. On World Bank GNI per capita, Atlas method, for 2025, Cameroon is US$1,860 against Chad's US$970 — a little under twice as rich per head. The two share a currency at the same 655.957 parity and the same 4.50% policy rate, so none of that gap is exchange-rate noise. Set against it, the striking number is the third one: 20.3% of Chad's imports come from Niger, another landlocked neighbour, on the Commission's 2025 main-partners panel — a bigger share than the EU27's 14.5%. The income comparison is same indicator, same method, same year on both sides — like for like. It is not a price comparison: no official source we could reach publishes a rent, meal or transit figure for either country.

City notes from Amit's own travels — the interactive travelogue holds the full record
Chad is an oil-dependent, landlocked economy with cotton and livestock.
Trade framework: Chad trades through AfCFTA, CEMAC, and the Arab League framework; there is no India–Chad FTA, and bilateral trade remains limited, mostly linked to oil.
India angle: energy and development are the main India links.
Outlook: oil and Sahel security define the outlook.
The page's AfCFTA block describes a continental market-access framework; the instrument itself has dates, and Chad's are unusual. The African Union's status list, dated 22 May 2026, records Chad signing on 21 March 2018 — the day the agreement was adopted — ratifying on 29 June 2018 and depositing its instrument on 2 July 2018, three days later and ten and a half months before the agreement entered into force on 22 May 2019. Across the continent the list totals 54 signatures, 49 ratifications and 49 depositions.
India implication: Three days from ratification to deposit is the fastest turn in this batch — the Central African Republic took five months and Cabo Verde fifteen — and it tells an Indian counterparty something about intent rather than capacity. Chad's continental obligations have been operative since before the agreement was live, so the constraint on using AfCFTA preferences into Chad is not treaty status but border practice. Verify rules-of-origin handling at the actual crossing, which for most cargo is not a Chadian port, because there isn't one.
Outlook: With 49 of 54 signatories deposited, coverage is close to complete; what changes landed cost is transit procedure through Cameroon and Niger, not further accessions.
The page's oil block names the commodity; the European Commission's 2025 country factsheet, dated 20 May 2026, gives the concentration. Mineral products are 96.4% of EU imports from Chad by HS section, with vegetable products at 3.5% and effectively nothing else. In value, EU imports from Chad were 1,625 million EUR against EU exports to Chad of 263 million EUR — total goods trade of 1,889 million EUR, and a six-to-one surplus in Chad's favour that almost no other country in this batch comes close to. Chad ranks 71st among EU import partners and 140th among EU export partners. For scale on the domestic side, oil rents were 16.75% of GDP in 2021, the most recent year the World Bank publishes for Chad.
India implication: This is a single-commodity counterparty, and an Indian buyer should price it that way. When one HS section is 96.4% of an export book, the country's foreign-exchange availability, its import capacity and its ability to pay an Indian supplier all move with one price on one screen — the deflation year in 2025 and the double-digit inflation before it are the same story seen from the consumer end. Structure receivables accordingly, and read Chad's ability to buy Indian goods as a derivative of the oil price rather than of its GDP.
Outlook: The 16.75% oil-rents figure is a 2021 reading and is labelled as such — the World Bank has published nothing newer for Chad. Treat it as an order of magnitude, not a current number.
For a country with no coastline, the interesting trade question is not what it sells but how what it buys gets in. On the Commission's 2025 main-partners panel, Chad's imports come from China at 26.6%, Niger at 20.3% and the EU27 at 14.5%. A landlocked neighbour supplying a fifth of national imports is not a normal pattern, and it says the overland corridor matters at least as much as the sea route the page's Douala framing implies for the region. What Europe does send is machinery and appliances 27.2%, foodstuffs, beverages and tobacco 27.0% and products of the chemical industries 12.2% of its exports to Chad — plant, food and chemicals, in roughly equal thirds.
India implication: Two practical reads. First, an Indian exporter's competition in Chad is Chinese on price and European on specification, and the Chinese share is nearly double the European — so a mid-specification, mid-price Indian offer is landing in the gap between them rather than against a single incumbent. Second, routing: a fifth of imports arriving overland from Niger means there is an established non-maritime channel, and freight quotes that assume everything must come through a Cameroonian port may be quoting the wrong corridor.
Outlook: Corridor shares in a landlocked market move with regional security and road conditions rather than with trade policy. Re-check the routing assumption on each shipment cycle, not each tariff cycle.
The page lists CEMAC as a bloc; this is what the membership actually consists of. The Communauté Économique et Monétaire de l'Afrique Centrale was established in 1994, succeeding the Union Douanière et Économique de l'Afrique Centrale, and has six member states: Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Chad. Its Commission sits in Bangui — Avenue des Martyrs, BP 969 — not in the largest member's capital. The same six states are the ones for which BEAC issues the Central African CFA franc at 655.957 to the euro, with a single policy rate of 4.50%.
India implication: Chad is not a monetary jurisdiction of its own, and that is mostly good news for an Indian exporter: the currency risk on a Chadian contract is euro risk, not frontier-currency risk, and the same hedge covers Cameroon, Gabon and the rest of the zone. The corollary is that a rupee-euro view, not a rupee-XAF view, is the one to take, and that a single CEMAC-wide commercial structure can serve six countries rather than one.
Outlook: Membership and the parity have both been stable since the 1990s. The thing to watch is Commission-level tariff and free-movement work, which is negotiated in Bangui and applies to Chad without any Chadian instrument.

Chad uses the Central African CFA franc (XAF). Capital: N'Djamena.
Chad trades through AfCFTA, CEMAC, and the Arab League framework; there is no India–Chad FTA, and bilateral trade remains limited, mostly linked to oil.
Chad faces security challenges in border regions near Libya, Sudan, and the Lake Chad Basin, so travel is best limited to more stable central areas, with current advisories checked before any visit.
Online, through Chad's own portal, and with time in hand. The platform at evisa.td describes itself as the "Plateforme officielle de demande de visa d'entrée au Tchad" and names the Direction de l'Émigration et de l'Immigration (D.E.I Tchad) behind it. India is not on the portal's list of 23 exempt nationalities — that list runs Barbade, Bénin, Bermudes, Cameroun, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Dominique, Gabon, Gambie, Guinée-Équatoriale, Île Maurice, Îles Cook, Malaisie, Mali, Micronésie, Niger, Nigéria, République centrafricaine, Rwanda, Saint-Vincent-et-les-Grenadines, Singapour, Surinam, Togo — so an Indian traveller applies. The portal accepts applications up to 90 days before travel and asks for them at least seven days before your entry date, with the passport biographical page, proof of yellow-fever vaccination and category-specific documents such as a hotel reservation, invitation letter, flight ticket or proof of funds. We are not quoting a fee: the portal's most recent notice, dated 11 May 2026, is headed "NOUVELLES TARIFICATIONS DES VISAS EN RÉPUBLIQUE DU TCHAD" and served only its headline, so check the current amount on the portal. Note too that India's Ministry of External Affairs does not list Chad in any of its facility tables, on a table compiled as on 3 March 2025 — an absence that predates the portal's current state.
On the price index, yes — and that is genuinely unusual. World Bank consumer price inflation for Chad was −3.91% in 2025, an outright fall, following +8.90% in 2024 and +10.84% in 2023. Any price guidance you read from 2023 or 2024 was set against a very different level, in both directions. The currency itself does not move: the Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale issues the Central African CFA franc for six member states at a fixed parity of 655.957 XAF to the euro, with indicative rates last updated 18/08/2026, and holds a single regional policy rate of 4.50%. For context on income, World Bank GNI per capita for 2025 is US$970 in Chad against US$1,860 in neighbouring Cameroon. We are not quoting rent or meal figures — no Chadian national statistics release was reachable on 19 August 2026, so nothing beyond these sourced indicators is asserted.
