Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.

Population 18,289,896 (2025)

GNI per capita US$6,890 (Atlas method, 2025); World Bank income classification: upper-middle income

Fully dollarized economy — the US dollar has been Ecuador's official legal-tender currency since 9 January 2000, when it replaced the sucre — BCE's own 25-years-of-dollarization microsite frames the regime as still 'a distinctive characteristic of the country'.

Consumer inflation 1.39% year-on-year in July 2026 (monthly −0.09%; year-to-date accumulated +1.30%)

India–Ecuador trade, officially stated: US$1.42 billion in 2022-23, up from US$541.14 million in 2020-21 — India's exports led by vehicles, iron & steel, plastics, pharmaceuticals, aluminium and rubber; Ecuador's exports led by mineral fuels (crude oil has been over 50% of India's imports from Ecuador in recent years), wood, cocoa, coffee, tea, spices, aluminium and zinc

Visas & entry

Visa-free up to 90 days for many; varies by nationality

e-Visa: no · Visa on arrival: No · Digital-nomad visa: Rentista / Remote Work Visa

Whether you need one: Indian ordinary-passport holders sit on Ecuador's 'Régimen Especial' (special-regime) nationality list and require a visa to enter — confirmed on the government's own 'visa de transeúnte' procedure page (nationality list, last updated 1 September 2025), which names India explicitly alongside roughly 45 other nationalities (including China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Vietnam).

When the requirement applies: Two MREMH temporary-visa products both carry India on this same restricted list: the 'visa de transeúnte' (transit only, ≤30 days) and the 'visa de visitante temporal turista' (general tourism/stay, 90 days). Both are administered by the same ministry through the same online portal.

How you apply: e-Visa — the entire application is digital, through the government's own serviciosdigitales.cancilleria.gob.ec portal; neither procedure page describes an in-person or paper-consulate channel.

Fee: US$80 total (US$50 application-review fee + US$30 visa-issuance fee; not subject to VAT) — the identical fee schedule is stated on both the fresh transeúnte page (1 September 2025) and the tourist-visa page (31 December 2024).

Source freshness: MREMH 'Visa de visitante temporal de transeúnte' procedure page — last updated 1 September 2025 — passes the 18-month gate; it anchors the requirement, the India-named nationality list, the instrument and the fee. The 'Concesión de visa de visitante temporal turista 90 días' procedure page — last updated 31 December 2024 — fails the gate; its one unique claim (the 90-day duration) is not shipped.

Getting around

Cheap long-distance buses, flights to the Galápagos, and taxis/rideshare in cities.

Car vs taxi: Rent for Andes/Avenue of Volcanoes; use Uber in cities over unmetered taxis.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The US dollar is official; cards in cities; cash for markets and rural areas.

SIM & data: eSIMs supported; cheap SIMs (Claro, Movistar) at Quito and Guayaquil airports.

Tipping: A 10% service charge is often included; a small extra is appreciated.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Greet with a handshake; Andean traditions are deeply respected in the highlands.

Food: Try ceviche, locro de papa and llapingachos; drink bottled or filtered water.

Say hello: Spanish — “Hola” · thanks “Gracias” · how much? “¿Cuánto cuesta esto?”

Safety & emergency

Generally safe in tourist areas; mind petty crime in Quito and Guayaquil at night.

Living, nomad & costs

For nomads: Emerging nomad destination in Quito and coastal areas; low cost of living and stable currency attract growing remote worker community.

Education: Budget-friendly Spanish immersion with quality instruction; very affordable universities.

Healthcare: Economical healthcare in Quito and Cuenca; good quality-to-cost ratio.

Prices: CPI up 1.39% year-on-year in July 2026 (monthly −0.09%; year-to-date accumulated +1.30%)

Neighbour comparison: Ecuador's dollarized economy posted 1.39% annual consumer-price inflation in the 12 months to July 2026 (INEC) — essentially flat, the mechanical result of having no domestic currency left to depreciate — while neighbouring Colombia's peso-denominated CPI ran at 6.03% over the identical 12 months (DANE, bulletin published 10 August 2026), more than four times higher. For Indian traders and remittance-senders, that gap is the practical payoff of Ecuador's 2000 dollarization: no exchange-rate pass-through to manage on the Ecuador leg of a transaction, against real currency risk on the Colombia leg.

Trade deep-dive

Ecuador's economy runs on crude oil, and it is one of the world's top exporters of bananas, shrimp, cut flowers and cocoa; it uses the US dollar.

Trade framework: Andean Community member, bilateral agreements with partners.

India angle: India buys Ecuadorean crude and is a market for its shrimp and cocoa.

Outlook: oil price exposure and the shrimp/agri export engine define the outlook.

Bloc — Andean Community: Ecuador is a member of the Andean Community, the regional trade bloc founded in 1969 under the Cartagena Agreement to coordinate economic integration among its Andean member states. This membership anchors Ecuador's regional trade-liberalisation framework alongside its other South American neighbours.

Product — Bananas: Ecuador is a globally recognised, geography-stable base for banana cultivation, benefiting from the country's coastal tropical growing conditions along the Pacific lowlands. Bananas function as a principal traditional agricultural export class central to the Ecuadorian economy.

Product — Oil: Oil extraction from the Amazon-basin Oriente region is a structurally significant pillar of the Ecuadorian export economy, reflecting the country's petroleum-bearing eastern geology. Oil functions as a principal traditional export class alongside bananas and other agricultural produce.

Future vector — Regional Trade Corridor Development: Ecuador's Pacific coastal geography frames a future-vector theme centred on strengthening port and logistics-corridor infrastructure linking Andean and Amazonian production zones to international shipping routes, alongside continued Andean Community regional integration and broader agricultural-export diversification efforts.

Product — Crude oil (HS 27) rides a price spike, not a volume gain

Ecuador's petroleum exports reached US$4.920 billion in the first half of 2026, up 14% year-on-year — but the gain is a price story: the average export price of crude rose 24% even as shipped volume fell 8% (Banco Central del Ecuador, 13 August 2026). Petroleum stayed the single largest line in a total export book of US$19.571 billion for H1 2026, narrowly ahead of shrimp (US$4.698 billion) and far ahead of bananas (US$2.361 billion).

India implication: Crude oil is also the dominant component of what Ecuador itself ships to India: the MEA's bilateral brief lists mineral fuels leading Ecuador's exports to India, and notes crude oil has been over 50% of India's imports from Ecuador in recent years — so Ecuador functions as a small but real crude supplier on the India side, layered on top of its much larger role as a Latin American oil producer generally.

Outlook: With India's imports from Ecuador leaning this heavily on one commodity, a further price swing in crude — in either direction — would move the whole bilateral trade number more than any single manufactured-goods deal could.

Product — Shrimp (HS 0306) is now Ecuador's largest non-oil export

Shrimp exports totalled US$4.698 billion in H1 2026 — within striking distance of petroleum's US$4.920 billion and well clear of every other single product, including mining (US$2.634 billion) and bananas (US$2.361 billion) (BCE, 13 August 2026). Non-petroleum exports overall rose just 1% year-on-year (12% once cacao's collapse is excluded) — shrimp is carrying almost all of that non-oil growth alone.

India implication: None of Ecuador's shrimp currently shows up in the bilateral line the MEA brief tracks — Ecuador's stated exports to India are mineral fuels, wood, cocoa, coffee, tea, spices, aluminium and zinc, with no seafood line — so this is an unexploited category rather than an existing flow.

Outlook: Ecuadorian shrimp already competes hard for share in China and the US; whether it can be positioned in India — a large but price-sensitive seafood market — is an open question this brief doesn't answer. It only establishes the scale Ecuador would be pitching from.

Sector — Agro-exports diverge: bananas steady, cacao collapses

Bananas and plantains held at US$2.361 billion in H1 2026, but cacao and its derivatives contracted 57% over the same period — the single line that dragged Ecuador's non-petroleum export growth down from a 12% pace to just 1% (Banco Central del Ecuador, 13 August 2026).

India implication: The MEA's bilateral brief already lists cocoa among Ecuador's exports to India, alongside coffee, tea and spices — so a 57% contraction in Ecuador's cacao exports globally is a category India-side buyers on this specific line should expect to feel, even though the brief does not break out an India-only cacao figure.

Outlook: Whether the cacao contraction is a one-period shock (weather, disease) or a structural repricing (world cocoa prices have swung sharply since 2024) isn't answered by this release — it is the line to watch in BCE's next quarterly print.

Bloc — Andean Community membership

Ecuador is one of four current member states of the Comunidad Andina (Andean Community), alongside Bolivia, Colombia and Peru (Comunidad Andina, accessed 24 August 2026).

India implication: India has no bloc-wide trade agreement with the Andean Community — unlike the India-MERCOSUR PTA that gives Indian exporters a preferential-tariff route into some other South American markets on this estate, nothing here gives Indian exporters preferential access to Ecuador via CAN membership; any access runs through Ecuador's general tariff schedule or a future bilateral arrangement.

Outlook: CAN's tariff and rules-of-origin regime binds Ecuador's trade with its three fellow members more closely than with outside partners; the intra-bloc trade volume itself wasn't available from CAN's own statistics unit within this session's sourcing, so this block stands on confirmed membership rather than a trade figure.

Framework — Dollarization removes currency risk from the Ecuador leg

Ecuador replaced the sucre with the US dollar as legal tender on 9 January 2000 and has run a fully dollarized economy since (Banco Central del Ecuador, 25-years-of-dollarization microsite). The Central Bank itself frames the regime as still 'a distinctive characteristic of the country' shaping monetary stability a quarter-century on.

India implication: For Indian trade and remittance flows, Ecuador is one of the few Latin American destinations where the local-currency leg of a USD-denominated transaction simply doesn't exist — the practical face of that is the inflation gap in u3 above (Ecuador 1.39% vs Colombia 6.03%, both to July 2026).

Outlook: Dollarization is a fixed structural fact, not a forecast variable — the open question for India-side planning is fiscal rather than monetary: whether the Ecuadorian state can keep financing itself without the devaluation lever other regional economies use.

Future vector — India-Ecuador trade more than doubled off its 2020-21 trough

Bilateral trade climbed from US$541.14 million in 2020-21 to US$1.31 billion in 2021-22 and US$1.42 billion in 2022-23 — official Indian government figures show it roughly tripling in two years (Ministry of External Affairs, October 2023 bilateral brief). The two sides held their Fifth Foreign Office Consultations in Quito on 23 June 2023, and Ecuador has stated support for India's permanent UNSC membership bid.

India implication: Diplomatic relations date to 1969 and India's registered investment in Ecuador is modest — about US$2.3 million — against one defence-linked outlier: HAL's 2008 sale of seven Dhruv helicopters worth US$45.20 million. The resident Indian community is small, roughly 350 (about 50 Persons of Indian Origin and 300 NRIs), concentrated in Quito and Guayaquil — a trade relationship without a large diaspora bridge behind it.

Outlook: The 2020-21-to-2022-23 trajectory is the strongest data point in the relationship; whether it continued through 2024-2026 is exactly the gap this payload could not close — no MEA brief newer than October 2023 was reachable this session (see deferred[]).

Frequently asked

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Ecuador?

Visa-free up to 90 days for many; varies by nationality

What currency does Ecuador use?

Ecuador uses the US dollar (USD). Capital: Quito.

What trade agreements does Ecuador have?

Andean Community member, bilateral agreements with partners.

Is Ecuador safe for travellers?

Generally safe in tourist areas; mind petty crime in Quito and Guayaquil at night.

Does Ecuador have its own currency, and does that matter for pricing a trip or a move?

No — Ecuador has used the US dollar as its sole legal-tender currency since 9 January 2000, when it replaced the sucre (Banco Central del Ecuador). That's also why its inflation runs so differently from its neighbours: consumer prices rose just 1.39% year-on-year in July 2026 (INEC), against 6.03% next door in Colombia over the identical 12 months (DANE) — there's no local-currency depreciation for a dollar-denominated budget to absorb.

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Ecuador?

Yes. India is named on Ecuador's 'Régimen Especial' nationality list, confirmed on the government's visa-de-transeúnte procedure page (updated 1 September 2025). The application is entirely online (e-Visa, via serviciosdigitales.cancilleria.gob.ec) and costs US$80 total (US$50 application fee + US$30 issuance fee). Exactly how many days a tourist visa grants isn't confirmed from a source fresh enough to publish here — see deferred[].

What does Ecuador actually export, and where does India fit in?

Ecuador's H1 2026 exports totalled US$19.571 billion, led by petroleum (US$4.920bn) and shrimp (US$4.698bn), with bananas at US$2.361bn and cacao down 57% (Banco Central del Ecuador). India barely registers in that mix: officially stated bilateral trade was US$1.42 billion in 2022-23, with Ecuador's side dominated by crude oil (over 50% of India's imports from Ecuador in recent years), plus wood, cocoa, coffee, tea and spices (Indian Ministry of External Affairs).

Is Ecuador part of a regional trade bloc?

Yes — Ecuador is one of four current members of the Comunidad Andina (Andean Community), alongside Bolivia, Colombia and Peru. India has no bloc-wide trade agreement with the Andean Community, so none of the group's internal tariff preferences extend to Indian exporters.

How many Indians live in Ecuador?

Around 350 — about 50 Persons of Indian Origin and 300 Non-Resident Indians, concentrated in Quito and Guayaquil (Indian Ministry of External Affairs, October 2023). Diplomatic relations between the two countries go back to 1969.

How high is cost-of-living pressure in Ecuador in 2026?

Mild and unusually flat for the region: consumer prices rose 1.39% in the 12 months to July 2026, and actually fell 0.09% in July itself (INEC). That's a direct product of dollarization — there is no peso, sol or other local currency to depreciate against the dollar prices Ecuadorians and visitors both pay in.
