Facts & figures

Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.

Population 3,935,766 (2025) — 2024 figure in the same pull: 3,812,518. Georgia's national statistics office (Geostat) separately displays 3,941.1 thousand as of 1 January 2026 on its own homepage (https://www.geostat.ge/en) -- a different point-in-time estimate not reconciled with this World Bank series.

GNI per capita, Atlas method (current US$) US$8,990 (2025)

GDP (current US$) approximately US$38.14 billion (2025) — Full-precision series value: US$38,143,612,855.14 (2025).

World Bank income classification: Upper middle income; capital Tbilisi; region Europe & Central Asia

Currency: Georgian Lari (GEL) — NBG's homepage confirms the Lari as Georgia's national currency and references a Monetary Policy Instruments section, but no current policy interest rate figure was present in the fetched extract.

Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (5): Georgia has a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) with the EU, plus FTAs with EFTA, China, Turkey and the CIS; India and Georgia trade under WTO terms with no bilateral FTA yet.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~120 destinations. Strong European and regional access.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders need a visa; an e-visa is available online, or entry may be simplified if you hold a valid visa or residence from certain countries. Many nationals, including EU citizens, enjoy visa-free stays of up to a year.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Whether you need one: Georgia operates a government e-Visa system (evisa.gov.ge) with a confirmed three-step Apply / Proceed with payment / Receive e-Visa process for eligible foreign nationals. The live portal homepage, fetched this session, does not itself state which nationalities are eligible, the fee, or the exact permitted-stay duration. A guessed FAQ sub-page (https://www.evisa.gov.ge/En/Faq) returned a 404, and the correct eligibility/country-list sub-page could not be located because WebSearch was unavailable this session. Whether Indian ordinary-passport holders are covered by this e-Visa channel -- and the additional provision of visa-free entry for holders of a valid Schengen/US/UK visa -- is therefore NOT confirmed this session; see deferred[].

When the requirement applies: Indian ordinary-passport holders (eligibility not confirmed on the live portal this session)

How you apply: e-Visa -- portal and application process confirmed; India-specific eligibility and the Schengen/US/UK visa-free-entry provision unconfirmed

Source freshness: https://www.evisa.gov.ge fetched live 24 August 2026; the homepage displays no explicit last-updated date of its own.

Getting around

Tbilisi has a two-line metro (buy a MetroMoney card), plus buses, minibus marshrutkas and the Bolt ride-hailing app; marshrutkas link Tbilisi with Kazbegi, Batumi and the wine country.

Car vs taxi: Renting a car (or a driver) is great for the Georgian Military Highway and Kakheti wine region; within Tbilisi, the Bolt app is cheap and easier than negotiating with taxis.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The Georgian lari (GEL) is the currency; cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi and Batumi, but carry cash for marshrutkas, rural guesthouses and mountain villages.

SIM & data: Magti, Geocell (part of Silknet) and Cellfie offer cheap tourist SIMs available at Tbilisi Airport and in shops with your passport; data is inexpensive.

Tipping: Tipping is becoming common in Tbilisi; a service charge of 10 to 15 percent is often added, otherwise leaving around 10 percent is a kind gesture.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Georgians are famously hospitable; if invited to a supra (feast), respect the tamada (toastmaster) and pace yourself with wine and chacha, and dress modestly when visiting Orthodox churches.

Food: Try khachapuri (especially the boat-shaped Adjaruli), khinkali dumplings, lobio bean stew, and mtsvadi grilled meat, paired with Georgian qvevri wines.

Say hello: Georgian — “Gamarjoba” · thanks “Madloba” · how much? “Ra ghirs?”

Safety & emergency

Georgia is very safe for travellers with low crime; mountain roads and weather in Kazbegi and Svaneti are the main risks, and avoid the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Living, nomad & costs

For nomads: Tbilisi is digital nomad hotspot with abundant coworking spaces, cheap living, and vibrant scene.

Education: Growing expat community with affordable international schools in Tbilisi.

Healthcare: Basic public healthcare; private clinics improving and affordable.

Headline consumer-price inflation of 5.5% for July 2026, as displayed on Geostat's homepage (the precise year-on-year vs. period basis was not further specified in the fetched extract)

Geostat's homepage also displays real GDP growth of 7.5% and GDP per capita of US$10,296.5 for 2025 (both preliminary), plus an unemployment rate of 13.9% for 2025

Neighbour comparison: DEFERRED -- no neighbour-country (e.g. Armenia, Azerbaijan) CPI figure was fetched this session; the 10-fetch session cap was prioritized to Georgia's own u1/u2/u4 core figures instead. See deferred[].

Not covered here: - no officially published rent/meal/transit series was fetched this session; Geostat's homepage surfaced only the aggregate CPI headline. See deferred[].

Product — Wine: Georgia's winemaking tradition, anchored in ancient qvevri clay-vessel fermentation techniques, is a longstanding structural feature of the country's agricultural export base. Vineyards concentrated in the Kakheti region supply both a domestic wine culture and an export trade distinct from the transit and logistics role Georgia plays for its Caucasus neighbours.

Product — Mineral Water: Georgia's mountain springs, particularly around Borjomi, anchor a longstanding mineral-water bottling and export industry recognised across the former Soviet space and beyond. This bottled-water trade forms a structurally distinct export category separate from the wine, transit and hydropower sectors that also anchor the Georgian economy.

Future vector — Agricultural Export Diversification: Georgia's varied highland and lowland microclimates frame a future-vector theme of diversifying agricultural exports beyond wine and mineral water into fruit, nuts and specialty crops. This structural direction builds on the country's longstanding farming traditions independent of its transit-corridor and regional-connectivity role.
