Facts & figures

Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.

India–Guatemala trade: The Embassy of India in Guatemala City reports steadily growing trade: from April to November 2024, Indian exports were US$421.59 million and total bilateral trade US$440.18 million — the largest India line in Central America. Exports run pharmaceuticals, cotton yarn and fibres, engineering products, two- and three-wheelers, vehicles, auto components, iron and steel, industrial and electrical machinery; India buys wood, wood charcoal and coffee. Around 15 Indian companies are active — Hero, Mahindra, TVS and Bajaj on the road, Cipla, Aurobindo, Caplin Point and MSN Labs in pharmacies.

Development partnership: The embassy donated over 1 million doses of Made-in-India medicines to Guatemala's health ministry for tuberculosis, epilepsy and type-II diabetes treatment, plus 10 Mahindra pickup trucks (US$215,000) in 2023 and 8 trucks to the Ministry of Culture. Guatemala has been an ITEC partner since 1997-98 with 40 annual training slots.

Trade deep-dive

Guatemala is Central America's largest economy, exporting coffee, sugar, bananas, cardamom (a world leader) and apparel, with big remittance inflows.

Trade framework: CAFTA-DR, bilateral agreements with Central American & other partners.

India angle: India buys cardamom and finds an apparel-sourcing peer.

Outlook: remittances and agri-exports steer the economy.

Bloc — CAFTA-DR: Guatemala is a member of the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement, the regional framework linking Central American economies with the United States and the Dominican Republic. CAFTA-DR membership anchors Guatemala's preferential access to the US market alongside regional Central American trade.

Product — Coffee: Coffee cultivation across Guatemala's volcanic highlands is a geography-stable, globally recognised anchor of the country's agricultural export economy. Coffee functions as a principal traditional export class alongside sugar and bananas, reflecting the country's varied tropical and highland growing zones.

Sector — Agriculture: Beyond coffee, Guatemala's broader agricultural base includes sugar, bananas and cardamom, reflecting the country's varied lowland and highland growing conditions. This diversified agricultural framework anchors a principal structural export sector for the Central American economy.

Future vector — Central American Integration: Guatemala's position within CAFTA-DR and wider Central American integration frameworks frames a future-vector theme centred on regional supply-chain development and continued preferential US market access alongside agricultural-export diversification, manufacturing-sector growth and further highland-coffee value-addition initiatives.

Named framework — Central America's biggest India line: US$440 million in eight months

The embassy's 2025 brief shows Apr–Nov 2024 alone reaching US$440.18 million, with the export mix a catalogue of India's mid-market strengths: generic pharma sold through local agents, cotton yarn feeding the maquila textile sector, and two- and three-wheelers from four Indian brands recognisable on Guatemalan streets. The development ledger runs alongside — a million-plus donated medicine doses and 150+ ITEC-trained Guatemalans since 1997.

India implication: Guatemala is India's Central American volume market: consumer-adjacent goods at scale rather than projects. The pharma-through-local-agents model is the replicable template for the neighbouring accreditations.

Outlook: Watch the embassy's active 2025-26 seminar pipeline (electronics/IT, plastics, tourism, medical tourism BSMs) for the next sector to graduate from events to shipments.
