Facts & figures

Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.

Population 41,024 (2025), up from 40,450 in 2024

GDP (current US$) US$8.91 billion in 2024, up from US$8.24 billion in 2023 and US$7.43 billion in 2022, following a 2020 pandemic-year trough of US$6.41 billion — a renewed nominal-growth trend for the microstate economy, per World Bank data — This fetch returned non-null current-price GDP for all 15 requested years (2010-2024) — fuller coverage than expected going in, since Liechtenstein's own statistics office typically publishes national accounts with a multi-year lag. The figure is World Bank's own current-price estimate and was not independently cross-checked against Liechtenstein's Amt fur Statistik this session (see deferred).

Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (30): An EFTA member — the India–EFTA TEPA is in force, giving Liechtenstein tariff-preferential access to India and a share in EFTA's USD 100 billion investment commitment; it also enjoys EFTA's ~30 FTAs plus full EU market access through the EEA.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~182 destinations. Microstate passport; Schengen member with global mobility.

Visas & entry

A Schengen member: Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa (90/180 rule), with Switzerland handling Liechtenstein's visa services abroad. Visa-free Schengen nationals enter freely — most arrive via Zurich since there is no airport.

e-Visa: no — entry is on a Schengen Type C visa, which is not issued online · Visa on arrival: no

  1. Schengen visas for entry are issued by Swiss representations abroad — Embassy of Switzerland in India — visa and entry · accessed 2026-08-24

Whether you need one: Indian ordinary-passport holders need a Schengen (Type C) visa to enter Liechtenstein for short stays, under the same EU short-stay rule applied across the Schengen area: non-exempt third-country nationals may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period (European Commission, Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs). Liechtenstein's own government portal (llv.li) lists a dedicated 'Visa' page within its Migration and Passport Office section, confirming Liechtenstein runs its own immigration administration domestically — but the substantive fee/requirement text on that specific subpage could not be retrieved in the single root-domain fetch made this session.

When the requirement applies: Indian ordinary-passport holders

How you apply: Schengen (Type C) visa

How long you may stay: Up to 90 days within any 180-day period, under the Schengen short-stay rule (European Commission).

Fee: Not sourced this session — no fee figure was retrieved from an official Liechtenstein or Swiss page.

Source freshness: The European Commission Schengen visa-policy page displays a 23 June 2025 update date — about 14 months before this research date, within the 18-month freshness window. Liechtenstein's own llv.li Visa subpage content and its freshness were not retrieved this session.

Getting around

No airport and no station in Vaduz — arrive via Zurich, train to Sargans or Buchs SG, then ride the lime-green LIEmobil buses that thread the entire 25-km country. Feldkirch in Austria is the other rail gateway.

Car vs taxi: LIEmobil buses are cheap, punctual and reach every village, so a car is optional; taxis are scarce and expensive. Rent only if combining Swiss–Austrian alpine touring or heading up to Malbun in winter.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: Swiss francs; euros are often accepted but at poor rates. Cards work everywhere and prices are firmly Swiss-level.

SIM & data: Liechtenstein is in the EEA, so EU SIMs roam at domestic rates here — unlike in neighbouring Switzerland, a handy quirk. Local operators include FL1 and Salt Liechtenstein, with Swiss networks spilling over the Rhine.

Tipping: Swiss-style: service is included, so simply round up or add a few francs for good service. Nobody will chase you for more.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Greet with a casual 'Hoi' or a polite 'Grüss Gott'; punctuality and quiet evenings are the norm. Say hello when entering small shops in Vaduz or Triesenberg.

Food: Order Käsknöpfle — cheese spätzle with applesauce and crispy onions — and Ribel cornmeal; then taste wines from the Prince of Liechtenstein's own Hofkellerei winery in Vaduz.

Say hello: German — “Hallo” · thanks “Danke” · how much? “Wie viel?”

Safety & emergency

Among the safest countries on earth, with near-zero crime. The only real risks are alpine weather on hikes above Malbun.

Living, nomad & costs

For nomads: Vaduz attracts wealthy professionals and remote workers; excellent internet but very high cost of living.

Education: Expensive education system; many choose Swiss or Austrian schools nearby.

Healthcare: Premium Alpine healthcare comparable to Switzerland; among Europe's highest costs.

Trade deep-dive

Liechtenstein is a high-income microstate with a surprisingly strong precision-manufacturing base (dental products, machinery) alongside financial services.

Trade framework: An EFTA member — the India–EFTA TEPA is in force, giving Liechtenstein tariff-preferential access to India and a share in EFTA's USD 100 billion investment commitment; it also enjoys EFTA's ~30 FTAs plus full EU market access through the EEA.

India angle: India engages via precision goods and finance.

Outlook: niche manufacturing and wealth management define the profile.

Bloc — EFTA: Liechtenstein is a member of the European Free Trade Association, the trade bloc linking Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein outside the European Union's customs structure. EFTA membership, combined with full European Economic Area participation, anchors Liechtenstein's access to the wider European single market.

Product — Precision Manufacturing: Precision manufacturing, spanning dental products, specialised machinery and small-scale components, is a structurally distinctive pillar of the Liechtenstein export economy, reflecting decades of niche industrial investment. This manufacturing base functions as a principal traditional export class alongside financial services.

Sector — Financial Services: Beyond precision manufacturing, Liechtenstein maintains a structurally significant banking and wealth-management sector, a policy-driven feature reflecting the microstate's longstanding position within the European financial landscape. Financial services sit alongside manufacturing as a principal structural pillar of the economy.

Future vector — EEA Market Integration: Liechtenstein's dual position within EFTA and the European Economic Area frames a future-vector theme centred on maintaining full single-market access alongside continued niche-manufacturing and financial-services competitiveness within the wider European regulatory environment and its customs union with Switzerland.

EFTA-India TEPA — Liechtenstein's live trade lane into India

Liechtenstein is one of the four EFTA states — alongside Iceland, Norway and Switzerland — that signed the EFTA-India Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) on 10 March 2024; the agreement entered into force on 1 October 2025. TEPA includes an Investment Promotion and Cooperation chapter (Annex 7A). Bloc-wide trade figures published on EFTA's own TEPA page show EFTA states' combined imports from India at EUR 3,213 million against combined exports to India of EUR 2,329 million — figures covering all four EFTA members together, not Liechtenstein alone.

India implication: As an EFTA member (though not an EU member), Liechtenstein-domiciled exporters and investors gain the same preferential India market-access terms under TEPA as their Swiss, Norwegian and Icelandic counterparts, including the agreement's investment-promotion provisions — relevant for Liechtenstein's export-oriented industrial and financial-services firms.

Outlook: TEPA was less than a year into force as of this research date (entered into force 1 October 2025); implementation and utilization data specific to Liechtenstein were not available this session.

EEA-EFTA membership — Liechtenstein's dual-track market access

Liechtenstein is one of three 'EEA EFTA States' — together with Iceland and Norway — that combine EFTA membership with European Economic Area participation; fellow EFTA member Switzerland is not part of the EEA. This dual structure is central to Liechtenstein's economic model: EEA participation gives Liechtenstein-based firms access to the EU single market, while EFTA membership brings Liechtenstein into EFTA's own free-trade-agreement network, including the EFTA-India TEPA.

India implication: Liechtenstein's India-facing trade access runs through its EFTA membership (TEPA), not through the EEA track, which governs its EU relationship instead — the two tracks operate in parallel rather than overlapping.

Outlook: No change to this EEA-EFTA structure was indicated in the material captured this session.
