Facts & figures

Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.

Income per head: GNI per capita, Atlas method: US$600 (2025). That is the World Bank's own latest value for Malawi, not an estimate.

Income group: The World Bank classifies Malawi as Low income, region Sub-Saharan Africa, lending type IDA.

Economy size: GDP (current US$): US$14,918,276,698.303 - about US$14.92 billion (2025). For scale, that is roughly half the size of neighbouring Zambia's economy and a fraction of a single Indian state's output.

What prices are doing: The National Statistical Office headlines its July 2026 release "Malawi Inflation slows down to 20.8 Percent in July 2026". The two months before it read 21.1 percent for June 2026 and 23.4 percent for May 2026 - falling, but from a very high base.

The India line: India's Ministry of External Affairs puts bilateral trade for 2023-24 at US$145.67 million, of which Indian exports to Malawi were US$87.18 million and exports from Malawi to India US$58.49 million. The same brief calls India "one of the largest investors in Malawi with over US$500 million worth investment".

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders need a visa, and the route both governments' records confirm is Malawi's e-Visa: India's Ministry of External Affairs lists Malawi under e-Visa on a table last updated 2 February 2026, and Malawi's own portal at evisa.gov.mw publishes the schedule — US$50 single entry, processed within three working days. Whether an Indian passport can instead take a visa on arrival is not settled by the official record: a Department of Immigration notice dated 24 February 2026 grants visa on arrival to nationals of 'Category Two Countries' and requires nationals of 'Category One Countries' to obtain a visa or prior authorisation before departure, but no readable official page publishes which countries sit in which category, and MEA does not list Malawi under Visa on Arrival. Apply online ahead of travel for a smoother arrival.

Amended 20 August 2026 — this section previously offered the visa 'via Malawi's e-Visa or on arrival' as settled options. The e-Visa half is confirmed by both governments; the on-arrival half rests on a country-category split whose lists are published on no readable official page, so it is now stated as unresolved rather than assumed.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

What India's own ministry lists: India's Ministry of External Affairs, in its Visa Facility for Indian Nationals (Ordinary Passports) table, lists Malawi under e-Visa with no qualifying remark. Malawi does not appear in the same page's Visa on Arrival table. The page carries a last-updated date of 2 February 2026.

What it costs and how long it takes: Malawi's official e-Visa portal publishes the schedule: transit visa US$50, single entry US$50, multiple entry for 6 months US$150, multiple entry for 12 months US$250. Applications "are processed within three (3) working days", must be paid online by credit or debit card in United States Dollars, and the fee is non-refundable. Validity runs from the date of issue, not from the date of arrival - so do not apply months early.

The rule that changed in February 2026: A public notice dated 24 February 2026 on the same portal splits the world in two: "nationals of Category Two Countries are now eligible to obtain a Visa on Arrival at all designated ports of entry into the Republic of Malawi", while "nationals of Category One Countries must obtain a visa or prior authorization before departure". The portal still tells everyone to apply before departure, to cut processing time at the port of entry and avoid delays.

What a visa is not: The Department of Immigration's own visa page is blunt about the limit of the document: a visa is an endorsement permitting entry, it does not guarantee entry, and an immigration officer may interview an arriving passenger and refuse admission. Visas are applied for online through the eVisa website; anyone intending to stay, work or do business is sent to the separate permit system at epermit.gov.mw instead.

Getting around

Intercity travel uses coaches (AXA, National Bus) and shared minibuses, plus the Ilala ferry on Lake Malawi; within Lilongwe and Blantyre use minibuses and taxis, with ride-hailing limited so hotel or arranged taxis are common. Malawi drives on the left.

Car vs taxi: Self-driving works for touring Lake Malawi and the parks on the main roads (a 4x4 helps in reserves and the rains); in cities, use hotel or arranged taxis, as app coverage is thin.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The kwacha is used for cash and is essential outside hotels; cards work at some city hotels and supermarkets but acceptance is limited, and Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba mobile money are common. Carry cash and note fuel and forex shortages can occur.

SIM & data: Airtel and TNM are the two carriers; register a SIM with your passport at the airport or a shop. Local eSIM support is limited, so a travel eSIM is a practical backup.

Tipping: Tipping around 10% is appreciated where no service charge applies, and lodge staff, guides and drivers are commonly tipped, especially around Lake Malawi resorts.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Known as the 'Warm Heart of Africa', Malawi is famously friendly, and unhurried greetings are expected. Use the right hand for giving and receiving, dress modestly, and show respect to elders and chiefs.

Food: Try nsima (maize staple) with relish and grilled or stewed meat, and chambo (a prized Lake Malawi tilapia). Drink bottled or boiled water and avoid tap water.

Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”

Safety & emergency

Malawi is peaceful and welcoming, with lakeside resorts and parks generally safe; petty theft occurs in the cities, and roads (plus the occasional fuel shortage) are the main practical concerns.

Living, nomad & costs

For nomads: Lilongwe and Blantyre have small nomad communities; English-speaking but limited amenities.

Education: Very affordable schools and universities.

Healthcare: Minimal costs for basic healthcare.

What prices are doing: The National Statistical Office's July 2026 release is headlined "Malawi Inflation slows down to 20.8 Percent in July 2026", after 21.1 percent in June 2026 and 23.4 percent in May 2026. The direction is good; the level still means a price quoted in kwacha today is a different price in six months.

The same story over a full year: On the World Bank's annual series, consumer price inflation averaged 28.3702565330281 percent across 2025 - about 28.4 percent. Read the monthly and the annual together and the shape is clear: 2025 was the peak, 2026 is the descent.

What a year of income looks like: GNI per capita, Atlas method, was US$600 in 2025. Malawi is one of the lowest-income countries the World Bank measures, and every cost sentence on this page should be read against that number rather than against a visitor's budget.

In rupee-brain terms: US$600 a year is about US$50 a month of national income per person. An Indian visitor's single US$50 e-Visa fee is, on that arithmetic, a month of average per-head income - which is the honest frame for why local prices and visitor prices in Malawi are two different economies.

Compared with Zambia: Across the western border, Zambia had GNI per capita of US$1,200 in 2025 - twice Malawi's US$600 - and consumer price inflation of 13.9099095827735 percent for the same year against Malawi's 28.3702565330281 percent. Two neighbours, one of them twice as rich per head and with inflation running at half the rate. If you are pricing a regional trip or a regional supply route, Malawi is the cheaper country to be in and the harder one to hold a price in. Both sides are World Bank series on the same definitions and the same year, so this comparison is like for like. No kwacha-to-dollar conversion is attempted anywhere in this block - the Reserve Bank of Malawi's own published rate is years out of date, and no more current official figure could be found.

Trade deep-dive

Malawi is an agriculture-dependent economy led by tobacco, tea, sugar and pulses, landlocked and aid-reliant.

Trade framework: Malawi is a member of SADC and COMESA and a signatory to the AfCFTA.

India angle: India buys Malawian pulses and tobacco.

Outlook: agri-diversification is the central challenge.

Bloc — SADC: Malawi is a member of the Southern African Development Community, the regional bloc coordinating trade, infrastructure and development policy across southern Africa. Malawi is also a member of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, giving it overlapping regional trade-integration frameworks.

Product — Tobacco: Tobacco cultivation is the dominant structural pillar of Malawi's agricultural export economy, reflecting the country's favourable growing conditions and smallholder farming base. Few economies in the region are as concentrated around a single agricultural export class, making tobacco the clear anchor sector.

Sector — Agriculture: Beyond tobacco, Malawi's broader agricultural base includes tea, sugar and groundnuts, reflecting the country's varied highland and lakeshore growing conditions along the Rift Valley. This diversified agricultural framework anchors a principal structural sector for the landlocked economy.

Future vector — AfCFTA Integration: Malawi's AfCFTA signatory status frames a future-vector theme centred on diversifying beyond tobacco-dependent trade through continental tariff liberalisation and regional value-addition in agricultural processing. This diversification theme, layered onto SADC and COMESA membership, anchors the country's longer-term trade trajectory.

Named framework - the SADC Free Trade Area, and what Malawi is actually inside

The page names SADC and COMESA; here is what the two secretariats themselves say those memberships are. SADC records Malawi as one of its 16 Member States, and dates its Free Trade Area to August 2008, by which point "85% of intra-regional trade amongst the partner states attained zero duty". Thirteen of the members take part in the FTA; Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo sit outside it. COMESA separately lists the "Republic of Malawi" among its member states and describes itself as 21 African states and over 600 million people. Malawi is therefore in two overlapping free-trade arrangements at once, which is the normal condition in this part of Africa rather than an anomaly.

India implication: For an Indian exporter the practical read is that Lilongwe is not a 22-million-person market, it is a door into two blocs whose tariff schedules Malawi already applies. Landing goods in Malawi and moving them onward under SADC or COMESA origin rules is only worth planning if the goods can actually earn regional origin - Indian-made finished goods cannot, but Indian inputs finished in Malawi can. That is the difference between a distributor deal and a light-assembly investment, and it is decided by rules of origin, not by freight cost.

Outlook: Watch the overlap rather than the blocs: where SADC and COMESA schedules diverge, a Malawian importer's paperwork - and your delivered price - follows whichever one their customer's market sits in.

Product - HS Section IV, and how narrow the export basket really is

The page says tobacco dominates. The European Commission's country trade factsheet, vintage 20-05-2026, shows just how far that dominance goes on the EU lane: of EUR 383 million of EU imports from Malawi in 2025, HS Section IV - foodstuffs, beverages, tobacco - is EUR 362 million, or 94.7%. Everything else is a rounding error: HS Section II, vegetable products, is EUR 19 million or 5.0%, and machinery and hides are 0.1% each. Total EU-Malawi goods trade was EUR 528 million in 2025, with EUR 146 million running the other way - EU exports to Malawi are led by chemicals at 37.2%, machinery at 17.0% and paper at 15.5%. The EU takes 27.6% of everything Malawi exports and supplies 8.1% of what it imports.

India implication: A 94.7% single-section export basket is a concentration risk written in one line, and it tells an Indian buyer where the negotiating leverage sits. Malawi needs buyers outside that one section far more than it needs another buyer inside it, so an Indian firm arriving with demand for pulses, oilseeds or processed agricultural inputs is arriving as a diversification story, not as one more bidder. On the import side the EU's mix - chemicals, machinery, paper - is precisely the space Indian manufacturers compete in on price, and 8.1% is not a wall.

Outlook: The number that moves is not the tobacco share but the denominator: any real growth in a second export section shows up first as Section IV falling below 90%.

Sector - the India lane, with the numbers

India's own Ministry of External Affairs puts bilateral trade for 2023-24 at US$145.67 million - Indian exports US$87.18 million, Malawian exports to India US$58.49 million - which is a near-balanced relationship at small scale, unusual for India in Africa. The development side is larger than the trade side: since 2008 India has extended lines of credit worth US$395.68 million to Malawi, including a US$215.68 million line for drinking-water supply schemes announced in November 2018. The brief also records "over US$500 million worth investment" by India in Malawi, about 8,500 Persons of Indian Origin resident in the country, and 150 ITEC training slots a year.

India implication: The concessional-finance stack is the door. Where a US$395.68 million line-of-credit programme is already running, the procurement it funds is the most reliable Indian entry point in the country - water infrastructure, agro-processing plant, transport equipment - and it is contracted in India, not won on the ground in Lilongwe. For a private exporter with no line-of-credit exposure, the 8,500-strong PIO community is the distribution layer that already exists, and the near-balanced trade means Malawian counterparties expect to sell as well as buy.

Outlook: Watch whether the trade number crosses US$200 million while the credit lines are drawn down; if it does not, this stays a development relationship with a trade footnote rather than the other way round.

Future vector - two rulebooks being rewritten at once

Two dated changes sit ahead of Malawi's exporters, and both are already law somewhere else. First, the African Union records the AfCFTA agreement as adopted on 21 March 2018 and in force since 22 May 2019, with the last signature logged on 5 June 2026 - the framework the page's own future-vector block names is no longer prospective, it is an instrument with an entry-into-force date and an implementation queue. Second, the EU's replacement Generalised Scheme of Preferences Regulation was signed on 18 June 2026, published in the Official Journal on 22 June 2026, and applies from 1 January 2027; the arrangement for least-developed countries, Everything But Arms, gives "duty-free, quota-free access to the EU market for all products except arms and ammunition", and which countries sit in which arrangement from that date is set by the beneficiary list the Commission publishes separately. Given the EU takes 27.6% of Malawi's exports, that date matters here more than the average African exporter would expect.

India implication: An Indian firm structuring anything in Malawi for delivery after January 2027 - a joint venture, a processing line, an offtake - should write the EU preference question into the contract rather than assume today's terms carry over. The AfCFTA date does the opposite job: it makes regional origin a live planning variable now, which is what turns "export to Malawi" into "manufacture in Malawi and sell regionally" for the small set of products where the margin supports it.

Outlook: The concrete thing to watch is the Commission's beneficiary list applicable from 1 January 2027 - it is the document that decides whether Malawi's 94.7% food-and-tobacco lane into Europe keeps its current terms.

Frequently asked

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Malawi?

Yes — and the confirmed route is the e-Visa: India's Ministry of External Affairs lists Malawi under e-Visa, and Malawi's own portal at evisa.gov.mw publishes US$50 single entry with three-working-day processing. Whether an Indian passport can instead take a visa on arrival is not settled by the official record — a Department of Immigration notice dated 24 February 2026 gives visa on arrival to 'Category Two Countries' without publishing which countries those are, and MEA does not list Malawi under Visa on Arrival. Apply online ahead of travel for a smoother arrival.

Amended 20 August 2026 — this answer previously offered 'e-Visa or on arrival' as settled options; the on-arrival half is unresolved in the official record and is now stated as such. See Visas & entry above.

What currency does Malawi use?

Malawi uses the Malawian kwacha (MWK). Capital: Lilongwe.

What trade agreements does Malawi have?

Malawi is a member of SADC and COMESA and a signatory to the AfCFTA. There is no India-Malawi FTA, though India is a notable trade partner and source of development cooperation.

Is Malawi safe for travellers?

Malawi is peaceful and welcoming, with lakeside resorts and parks generally safe; petty theft occurs in the cities, and roads (plus the occasional fuel shortage) are the main practical concerns.

What does a Malawi e-Visa cost an Indian passport holder in 2026, and how long does it take?

Malawi's official e-Visa portal, run by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, publishes the schedule: US$50 for a single entry, US$50 for transit, US$150 for a six-month multiple entry and US$250 for a twelve-month multiple entry. Applications are processed within three working days, must be paid online by card in United States Dollars, and the fee is non-refundable. Validity starts from the date of issue, so applying far ahead of the trip wastes part of it. India's Ministry of External Affairs, in its Visa Facility for Indian Nationals table last updated 2 February 2026, lists Malawi under e-Visa. A separate Malawi public notice dated 24 February 2026 makes visa on arrival available to nationals of "Category Two Countries" while nationals of "Category One Countries" must obtain a visa or prior authorisation before departure - Malawi does not publish which list India is on, so apply online before you fly.

Is Malawi cheap in 2026, and how does it compare with Zambia?

Cheap for a visitor, hard for a resident. The National Statistical Office headlines its July 2026 release "Malawi Inflation slows down to 20.8 Percent in July 2026", after 21.1 percent in June and 23.4 percent in May; the World Bank's annual series puts 2025 inflation at about 28.4 percent. Income is the other half of the picture: GNI per capita, Atlas method, was US$600 in 2025, roughly US$50 a month per person - the same as one single-entry e-Visa fee. Across the border Zambia had GNI per capita of US$1,200 and inflation of about 13.9 percent in the same year, so a Malawian earns roughly half what a Zambian does while facing double the price rises.
