Trade agreements (5): Mongolia has an Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan and is a WTO member pursuing wider deals; there is no India FTA, though India extends development credit lines and strategic partnership.
Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~70 destinations. Regional and some European visa-free access.

Indian passport holders need a visa, available as an e-visa or from the embassy, typically for stays up to 30 days. Many nationalities now enjoy visa-free entry for up to 30 days under Mongolia's tourism-friendly policy.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
Whether you need one: Indian passport holders need a visa. India is not among the 34 states the Immigration Agency of Mongolia exempts from the 30-day tourist-visa requirement for 2026 (the list runs to European states plus the UK, Australia and New Zealand).
How you apply: e-Visa. 'The Republic of India' appears in the eligible-nationality list on the official e-visa portal operated by the Immigration Agency of Mongolia; applications at https://evisa.mn/en/apply.
How long you may stay: Tourist entries sit inside the same 30-day frame the 2026 exemption waives for exempt states — consistent with the 'up to 30 days' already on this page. Formal e-visa validity/stay table not retrievable (portal in maintenance).
Passport validity: Passport must be valid for a minimum of 180 days (evisa.mn requirement).
Business visas: A ten-day business visa can now be applied for without an inviting entity (Immigration Agency of Mongolia announcement, 2026).
The reverse direction: In the reverse direction, India announced free e-visas for Mongolian citizens at the 14 October 2025 India–Mongolia joint press statement.
Source freshness: immigration.gov.mn 2026 exemption list is current-year (passes 18-month gate). evisa.mn footer shows © 2026 but carried a maintenance banner and a residual Covid-era notice at access time — cited for channel + 180-day passport rule only, no fee/duration figures taken from it.

Ulaanbaatar has buses and heavy traffic but no metro; taxis are often unmarked private cars, so agree fares, and the UBCab app helps, while intercity travel means shared vans or the Trans-Mongolian railway.
Car vs taxi: Self-driving is impractical off the paved network, so hire a driver with a sturdy 4x4 for the Gobi and countryside; in Ulaanbaatar, use the UBCab app rather than flagging cars.
Money: The Mongolian tögrög (MNT) is the currency; cards work in Ulaanbaatar, but carry plenty of cash once you leave the capital for the steppe and Gobi.
SIM & data: Buy a Mobicom, Unitel or Skytel SIM at Chinggis Khaan International Airport or in Ulaanbaatar; coverage is good in towns but patchy in the deep countryside.
Tipping: Tipping is not traditional but is appreciated in Ulaanbaatar tourist restaurants at around 10 percent; guides and drivers on ger-camp tours welcome a gratuity.
Etiquette: In a ger, move clockwise, accept offered dairy and snuff with your right hand, avoid stepping on the threshold, and never point your feet at the fire or altar.
Food: Try buuz (steamed dumplings), khuushuur (fried meat pastries), khorkhog (meat cooked with hot stones), and airag (fermented mare's milk); mutton dominates.
Say hello: Mongolian — “Sain bainuu” · thanks “Bayarlalaa” · how much? “Yamar une?”
Mongolia is generally safe, though pickpocketing occurs in crowded Ulaanbaatar spots; the greater risks are extreme weather, remoteness and long overland distances.
For nomads: Ulaanbaatar has small but growing digital nomad scene; harsh winters; infrastructure improving with coworking hubs.
Education: Few international schools; education costs rising in Ulaanbaatar.
Healthcare: Limited private healthcare; expats often seek care in China or Japan.
Inflation 13.0% nationwide, July 2026 (core 7.6%); Ulaanbaatar also 13.0%
MNT 3,594.40 per US$ (18 August 2026) — price any tögrög lease or long stay against this, with double-digit inflation running
Neighbour comparison: Across 2025 as a whole, consumer prices rose 8.6% in Mongolia against 0.1% in neighbouring China (World Bank annual CPI series) — and the gap widened into 2026 with Mongolia's July print at 13.0%. Indian remote workers budgeting a season in Ulaanbaatar should assume MNT costs drift up in-year in a way they would not across the southern border.
Not covered here: No official rent/meal/transit series reachable; existing qualitative nomad lines on the page left untouched.

Mongolia acceded to APTA on 29 September 2020 as the agreement's seventh participating state — the first expansion since China joined in 2001. The pact, running since 1975 under UN ESCAP, groups Mongolia with Bangladesh, China, India, the Republic of Korea, Lao PDR and Sri Lanka, giving Ulaanbaatar preferential tariff access across South, South-West and Southeast Asia plus China, its largest trading partner.
India implication: APTA is the one live preferential-tariff channel between India and Mongolia — otherwise trade prices at MFN rates. For Indian importers of Mongolian cashmere and hides, and Indian exporters eyeing Ulaanbaatar, the APTA concession lists are the first thing to check before quoting.
Outlook: ESCAP's fifth negotiating round is working to widen tariff coverage and extend into services, investment and trade facilitation — deepening the only India–Mongolia tariff lane short of a bilateral FTA.
Mongolia's Oil Refinery Project runs on a US$1.7 billion Indian line of credit and ranks, in New Delhi's own words, as 'India's largest development partnership project globally', with over 2,500 Indian professionals working alongside Mongolian counterparts — confirmed at the 14 October 2025 joint press statement marking 10 years of the Strategic Partnership and 70 years of diplomatic ties.
India implication: This is the India angle in hard currency: EXIM-financed energy infrastructure giving a coal-and-copper exporter its first domestic fuel base, and Indian engineering a flagship reference project in North-East Asia — a different lane from the Tavan Tolgoi coal story covered above.
Outlook: Once commissioned, the refinery is positioned to cut Mongolia's dependence on imported fuel; the October 2025 statement points the private sector at critical minerals, rare-earths, energy and dairy as the next corridors.

For 2026 the Immigration Agency of Mongolia exempts nationals of 34 countries — European states plus the UK, Australia and New Zealand — from the 30-day tourist-visa requirement. India is not on the list, so Indian travellers apply through the official e-visa portal (evisa.mn); passports need at least 180 days' validity.
13.0% nationwide in July 2026 (core 7.6%), well above the Bank of Mongolia's 6% ±2pp target; the policy rate moved to 12.5% on 13 August 2026. For comparison, Mongolia's 2025 average was 8.6% against 0.1% in neighbouring China (World Bank).
