Forts, wadis and mountains meeting the sea

In focus · 2026

Oman is India's newest FTA partner, on unusually generous terms: the CEPA signed in Muscat in December 2025 took effect on 1 June 2026, scrapping Omani duties on 99.4% of Indian exports by value from day one — the Sultanate's first such pact with anyone since the US in 2006. With bilateral trade near $11 billion, over 600,000 resident Indians and CEPA chapters covering 127 service sub-sectors and professional mobility, Muscat is arguably the Gulf's most India-friendly base right now.

Facts & figures

Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.

Population 5,494,691 (2025) — Prior year 2024: 5,281,538 — same series, same fetch.

GNI per capita US$19,520 (Atlas method, 2024), down from US$19,950 in 2023 — This indicator's most recent published value is 2024, not 2025 — one year behind the population/GDP series fetched the same session; see deferred rank 5.

GDP (current US$) approximately US$109,605 million (2025), up from US$107,137 million (2024), +2.3% nominal — Growth % is arithmetic on the two officially-sourced current-US$ data points, not a WB-published growth-rate indicator (NY.GDP.MKTP.KD.ZG was not fetched this session).

World Bank income classification: high income; region 'Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan & Pakistan'; capital Muscat

Omani Rial (OMR) held on a fixed peg to the US Dollar, quoted at OMR 0.384 = US$1 as of 17 February 2026; OMR 0.0042311 = INR 1 the same date — CBO's own site labels this 'The Fixed Peg of the Rial Omani to the US Dollar'; page also carried government Treasury Bill and payment-system (RTGS/ACH) figures not used here — see deferred rank 1 for why.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders can apply online for Oman's e-visa (typically a 10-day or 30-day tourist visa); GCC residents and certain nationalities have simplified entry. Many Western nationals also use the e-visa portal, with visa-free access for a growing list of countries.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

When the requirement applies: Indian ordinary-passport holders

Source freshness: No last-updated date visible on the fetched evisa.rop.gov.om homepage; the parent Royal Oman Police site (rop.gov.om) returned only a JS-rendered shell with no extractable text this session, so the 18-month timeliness check could not be applied to any category-specific content.

Getting around

Muscat relies on Mwasalat public buses and taxis rather than a metro; orange-and-white taxis rarely use meters, so agree the fare first, while intercity Mwasalat coaches link Muscat, Nizwa, Sur and Salalah.

Car vs taxi: A rented car is ideal for exploring Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar and the coast, as distances are long and public transport is thin; within Muscat, taxis or ride-hailing apps like OTAXI work fine.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The Omani rial (OMR) is one of the world's strongest currencies and is divided into 1000 baisa; cards are accepted in cities but carry cash for souqs like Muttrah and rural areas.

SIM & data: Grab an Omantel or Ooredoo tourist SIM at Muscat International Airport with your passport; eSIM options and cheap data bundles are widely available.

Tipping: Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory; leave 10 percent at restaurants if service is not already added, and a few hundred baisa for hotel porters and drivers.

Culture & language

Etiquette: Dress modestly, remove shoes before entering homes and mosques, and use your right hand for eating and greetings; Ramadan daytime eating in public is discouraged.

Food: Try shuwa (slow-roasted spiced lamb), machboos rice with fish, harees, and Omani halwa, often served with kahwa (cardamom coffee) and dates.

Say hello: Arabic — “As-salamu alaykum” · thanks “Shukran” · how much? “Bikam?”

Safety & emergency

Oman is among the safest countries in the region with very low crime; the main hazards are flash floods in wadis and desert heat, so check weather before venturing out.

For nomads: Growing nomad scene in Muscat with coworking spaces and reliable infrastructure; expat-friendly with good Western amenities.

Education: Moderate costs, expat schools well-established in Muscat.

Healthcare: Modern healthcare system with government and private options.

Prices: Consumer Price Inflation Report shows inflation at 3.2% for July 2026, published 13 August 2026

Product — Frankincense: Oman's Dhofar region is the historic origin of the frankincense trade, an aromatic resin harvested from native trees and carried along ancient caravan and maritime routes toward the Mediterranean and beyond. This heritage trade forms a structurally distinct, geography-stable export category from Oman's petrochemical and Sohar-anchored industrial trade.

Sector — Historic Indian Ocean Maritime Trade: Oman's coastal geography anchored a centuries-old seafaring and dhow-trading tradition connecting the Arabian Peninsula with East Africa and South Asia. This maritime heritage forms a structurally distinct chapter of Omani economic history, separate from the petrochemical and industrial-zone development that otherwise anchors the economy.
