Rainforest, chimpanzees and Atlantic beaches
Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.
Income per head: GNI per capita, Atlas method: US$830 (2025). That places Sierra Leone in the bottom band of this Africa batch - above Somalia's US$640, and a twenty-third of Seychelles' US$19,200 - and it is the number that should size any proposal written for this market.
Income group: The World Bank classifies Sierra Leone as Low income, region Sub-Saharan Africa. Low income status is not only a description: it is the eligibility gate for concessional IDA finance and for duty-free preference schemes in the EU and elsewhere, which is why donor-funded procurement is a larger share of the addressable market here than the private economy alone would suggest.
Economy size: GDP (current US$): US$7,464,157,904.43509 - about US$7.46 billion (2025). Statistics Sierra Leone separately puts real GDP growth at 4.4% for 2024. A small economy growing at a respectable clip, which is a better frame for it than the post-conflict shorthand the page's nomad line still carries.
How open the economy is: Exports of goods and services were 20.89% of GDP in 2025 - about a quarter of the Seychellois ratio. Despite the page's diamond and iron-ore blocks, this is not a hyper-open trading economy; four fifths of activity is domestic. Mineral exports are the headline but not the bulk.
What prices are doing: Inflation has turned back up. Statistics Sierra Leone puts national year-on-year inflation at 14.77% in June 2026, against 12.69% in May - a 2.08 percentage-point jump in a single month - with month-on-month at 1.57% and the CPI index at 276.70 on a December 2021 = 100 base. The Bank of Sierra Leone carries the same 14.77% figure on its own dashboard and holds the Monetary Policy Rate at 17.00%.

Trade agreements (4): Sierra Leone participates in AfCFTA, ECOWAS, and retains Commonwealth trade ties; India has no bilateral FTA with Sierra Leone, though Commonwealth linkages support some trade facilitation.
Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~54 destinations. ECOWAS & Commonwealth connections; good access.

Indian passport holders can apply for an e-visa online before arrival or obtain a visa on arrival at Freetown's airport in many cases; tourist stays are typically granted for up to 30 days.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
The two routes, and which authority runs them: The Sierra Leone Immigration Department operates the pre-travel route itself, at the official eVisa portal evisa.sl, with work and residence permits handled separately through unifiedpermit.gov.sl. SLID's notices page carries an eVisa Service Advisory dated 20 February 2026 stating that 'Applicants should apply only via the official eVisa portal' - a warning aimed at the third-party sites that have grown up around it. The visa-on-arrival route at Freetown runs alongside it rather than instead of it.
What the visa on arrival costs, and why India qualifies: The visa-on-arrival policy has been in force since 5 September 2019 and is published with a three-tier fee schedule: 'ECOWAS nationals - Visa-free', 'Non-Ecowas AU nationals - USD 25.00', and 'All other countries - USD 80.00'. India appears on the eligible list explicitly, under the BRICS grouping alongside Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, so an Indian passport sits in the third tier at USD 80.00. Nationals of countries not on the list must obtain a visa from a Sierra Leone mission before travelling.
How long the first stamp runs: The page's 'typically up to 30 days' is right, and the Immigration Department says where the number comes from: 'The passport is usually stamped for one month at the first instance', with extensions available thereafter. SLID categorises entry by purpose - Business, Tourist/Visit and Student - and the one-month first stamp is the default across them.
The document rule that turns people away: SLID issued a Travel Advisory on 28 January 2026 stating that 'Travellers are advised to ensure passports have at least 6 months validity prior to travel.' That is the single most common reason a visa-on-arrival traveller is refused boarding rather than refused entry, because the airline applies it at check-in in Delhi or Mumbai, long before Freetown sees the passport.
What India's own ministry lists: India's Ministry of External Affairs, in its Visa Facility for Indian Nationals (Ordinary Passports) table, lists Sierra Leone under Visa-on-Arrival, with no restricting condition in the remarks column. The MEA page carries a last-updated date of 2 February 2026. India's own ministry and Sierra Leone's own immigration department agree, which is the standard this block is held to and does not often meet.

Shared poda-poda minibuses and okada motorbike taxis are common in Freetown; a ferry or water taxi connects Lungi Airport to the city across the estuary.
Car vs taxi: Hired taxis with drivers are the practical choice in Freetown's hilly, congested streets; self-driving is uncommon for visitors given road conditions and traffic patterns.
Money: Sierra Leonean leone (SLE, the redenominated currency) is legal tender; cash dominates outside upscale Freetown hotels, so plan to withdraw from city ATMs.
SIM & data: Africell, Orange, or Qcell SIMs are easy to find at Freetown's Lungi Airport or in the city; passport registration is required and prices are affordable.
Tipping: Not obligatory, but 10% at restaurants in Freetown catering to tourists and a small tip for hotel porters and drivers is customary.
Etiquette: English is widely spoken alongside Krio; greetings matter, handshakes are common, and modest dress is appropriate, particularly when visiting rural communities.
Food: Try cassava leaf stew or groundnut (peanut) soup served with rice, both Sierra Leonean staples often accompanied by grilled fish.
Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”
Freetown and main tourist areas are generally manageable with normal precautions; petty crime occurs in crowded markets, so keep valuables secure and avoid isolated areas at night.
For nomads: Small but growing scene in Freetown; internet improving post-recovery; coworking emerging.
Education: English language; limited international options.
Healthcare: Basic care; serious illness often requires travel.
What prices are doing: Statistics Sierra Leone puts national year-on-year inflation at 14.77% in June 2026, up from 12.69% in May - a 2.08 percentage-point jump in one month - with month-on-month inflation at 1.57% and the CPI index at 276.70 against a December 2021 base of 100. In four and a half years the general price level has grown by a factor of 2.77. Any leone-denominated price older than a quarter should be treated as stale.
Where the pain actually is: The headline hides an extraordinary split. Statistics Sierra Leone attributes the June 2026 annual rate mainly to housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, running at 81.33% year on year and up 15.87 percentage points in the month, and to transport at 40.23%, up 2.83 points. Food and non-alcoholic beverages, by contrast, rose only 6.79%. Non-food inflation overall was 21.03%. Housing and power, not food, are what is breaking budgets in Freetown.
What money costs: The Bank of Sierra Leone holds the Monetary Policy Rate at 17.00%, with the Standing Deposit Facility at 11.50% and the Standing Lending Facility at 21.00%. A local distributor borrowing working capital is doing so above 21%, which is the number that should shape payment terms on any Indian export contract into this market - offer credit and you are competing with a 21% alternative.
What the leone is worth: The Bank of Sierra Leone publishes a midrate of SLE 26.3709 to the US dollar. Read it with care: the bank's page does not print a date against the rate, so it is written here as the bank's current published midrate rather than as a rate for a named day. With inflation at 14.77% this figure moves, and it should be re-checked at the time of any transaction rather than carried forward.
What the trip costs before you land: Unlike most entries in this family, the entry cost here is a published number: USD 80.00 for a visa on arrival on an Indian passport, under the three-tier schedule that also gives ECOWAS nationals visa-free entry and non-ECOWAS African Union nationals USD 25.00. Budget it as a fixed line, and budget the six-month passport-validity rule as a hard prerequisite.
Compared with Somalia: Both Sierra Leone and Somalia are Low income economies on the World Bank's current classification, and both are in this batch - but their price environments have diverged sharply. Sierra Leone ran 14.77% year-on-year inflation in June 2026; Somalia ran 8.1% over the twelve months to the same month, a little under half the rate. The reason is instructive rather than flattering: Somalia's economy is heavily dollarised, so it imports the dollar's price stability, while Sierra Leone runs its own leone and is paying for it in an 81.33% housing-and-power inflation rate. Sierra Leone is the larger and more governable market; Somalia is the more monetarily stable one. Neither of those is the advantage a page like this usually implies. Both are national statistics-office CPI figures on their own unharmonised baskets, one month apart (Sierra Leone June 2026, Somalia twelve months to June 2026). The dollarisation explanation is an interpretation of the gap, not a sourced claim, and is written as such.

City notes from Amit's own travels — the interactive travelogue holds the full record
Sierra Leone exports diamonds, titanium ores (rutile), iron ore, cocoa and fish.
Trade framework: Sierra Leone participates in AfCFTA, ECOWAS, and retains Commonwealth trade ties; India has no bilateral FTA with Sierra Leone, though Commonwealth linkages support some trade facilitation.
India angle: India engages on minerals and development.
Outlook: mining recovery and agriculture drive the outlook.
The page names ECOWAS and AfCFTA but not the relationship that actually carries the largest share of Sierra Leone's external trade outside the region. The European Commission's country factsheet, dated 20 May 2026, puts total EU-Sierra Leone goods trade at 490 million EUR in 2025 - 237 million EUR of EU imports from Sierra Leone and 253 million EUR of EU exports to it. On the Commission's own measure the EU supplied 14.4% of Sierra Leone's imports and took 17.6% of its exports. Note the direction: the EU sells Sierra Leone slightly more than it buys, which is unusual for a mineral-exporting Low income country and tells you the mineral trade is largely going elsewhere.
India implication: The near-balance is the opening. An EU trade relationship running 253 million EUR of exports into a 7.46-billion-dollar economy is a supply position built on freight cost and habit rather than on preference, and both are contestable. Indian pharmaceuticals, vehicles, machinery and processed foods compete on the same terms into Freetown as European ones, with no EU tariff advantage on the inbound leg. This is the rare African market where an Indian supplier is not structurally disadvantaged against Europe.
Outlook: Watch the export leg. If the EU import share of 17.6% climbs, minerals are re-routing to Europe; if it falls, they are consolidating in Asia.
The page carries two Product blocks, Diamonds and Iron Ore. The EU's own import data says neither is what Europe actually buys. In the Commission's 2026 factsheet, HS Section IV - Foodstuffs, beverages, tobacco - is 72.2% of EU imports from Sierra Leone in 2025, worth 171 million EUR. Mineral products (HS Section V) are 17.8% at 42 million EUR, chemicals 3.6% at 9 million EUR, and pearls and precious metals (HS Section XIV) - the section that contains diamonds - just 2.9%, or 7 million EUR. Animal and vegetable fats and oils add 1.4%. Agriculture, not mining, is what the EU imports from Sierra Leone.
India implication: This reframes the market. If 72.2% of the EU's purchases are agricultural and only 2.9% are precious stones, then the value chain worth selling into is agro-processing - drying, milling, oil extraction, cold chain, grading and packaging equipment, plus the inputs those lines consume. That is squarely an Indian equipment and machinery capability, sold at a price point European suppliers struggle to match, into a sector with a demonstrated 171-million-EUR European offtake. The diamond story is the one everyone tells and the smallest number on the list.
Outlook: The gap between the page's mineral framing and the EU's food-dominated import basket is large enough that the Diamonds and Iron Ore blocks should be read as domestic-economy claims, not export-market ones.
One line in the June 2026 CPI release governs the economics of everything else on this page. Statistics Sierra Leone reports housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels running at 81.33% year on year, up 15.87 percentage points in a single month, with transport at 40.23%. Against that, food and non-alcoholic beverages rose only 6.79%. The national rate of 14.77% is an average that conceals an energy shock. The Bank of Sierra Leone's response is a Monetary Policy Rate of 17.00%, with lending at the standing facility priced at 21.00%.
India implication: Energy at 81.33% and credit at 21.00% together define the deal that works here. Anything sold on the promise of running cost - electric plant, cold storage, continuous-process equipment - has to be priced against a power bill that nearly doubled in a year, so the winning specification is the one that uses less energy rather than the one that costs less to buy. And because local working capital is priced above 21%, an Indian exporter offering 90-day terms is offering something materially cheaper than a Sierra Leonean bank. Terms, not unit price, are the competitive lever in this market in 2026.
Outlook: Watch whether the housing and utilities line decelerates in the second half of 2026. If it does not, expect the MPR above 17.00% and demand for imported capital goods to fall with it.
The page's Bloc block treats ECOWAS as a fixed quantity. It is not. ECOWAS's own site, which describes the Community as having worked 'Since 1975... for the integration, peace and shared prosperity of West Africa', now states its composition as '12 Member States, one region'. That is a smaller bloc than the fifteen the page's framing assumes, and a smaller preferential market behind the ECOWAS common external tariff. Set against it, Sierra Leone's own trade exposure is modest - exports of goods and services were 20.89% of GDP in 2025 - so the regional preference matters less to Sierra Leone's export book than the AfCFTA block implies.
India implication: A twelve-member ECOWAS changes the arithmetic on any regional distribution structure. An Indian firm that set up in Freetown to serve West Africa behind the common external tariff is now serving a smaller preferential footprint than the plan assumed, and the countries that left are the ones that were reachable overland. Re-run the market sizing on twelve, and treat coastal ECOWAS and the Sahel as two logistics problems rather than one.
Outlook: Membership arithmetic is the leading indicator here. Watch the member-state count before the tariff schedule; the schedule follows it.

Indian passport holders can apply for an e-visa online before arrival or obtain a visa on arrival at Freetown's airport in many cases; tourist stays are typically granted for up to 30 days.
Sierra Leone uses the Sierra Leonean leone (SLE). Capital: Freetown.
Sierra Leone participates in AfCFTA, ECOWAS, and retains Commonwealth trade ties; India has no bilateral FTA with Sierra Leone, though Commonwealth linkages support some trade facilitation.
Freetown and main tourist areas are generally manageable with normal precautions; petty crime occurs in crowded markets, so keep valuables secure and avoid isolated areas at night.
Yes, and there is also an e-visa route - both are official. India's Ministry of External Affairs lists Sierra Leone under Visa-on-Arrival in its Visa Facility for Indian Nationals (Ordinary Passports) table, last updated 2 February 2026. Sierra Leone's published visa-on-arrival policy, in force since 5 September 2019, names India explicitly among eligible nationalities and sets the fee schedule at 'ECOWAS nationals - Visa-free', 'Non-Ecowas AU nationals - USD 25.00' and 'All other countries - USD 80.00', so an Indian passport pays USD 80.00. If you prefer to arrange it before travel, the Sierra Leone Immigration Department runs an official eVisa portal at evisa.sl, and its notice of 20 February 2026 warns that 'Applicants should apply only via the official eVisa portal'. Whichever route you take, the passport 'is usually stamped for one month at the first instance', with extensions available - and SLID's advisory of 28 January 2026 asks travellers to 'ensure passports have at least 6 months validity prior to travel', which airlines enforce at check-in.
Fast, and it is energy rather than food. Statistics Sierra Leone puts national year-on-year inflation at 14.77% in June 2026, up from 12.69% in May - a 2.08 percentage-point jump in one month - with month-on-month inflation at 1.57% and the CPI index at 276.70 against a December 2021 base of 100. The driver is unmistakable: housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose 81.33% year on year, up 15.87 percentage points in the month, and transport 40.23%, while food and non-alcoholic beverages rose only 6.79%. The Bank of Sierra Leone holds the Monetary Policy Rate at 17.00%, with its standing lending facility at 21.00% and its published midrate at SLE 26.3709 to the US dollar. For comparison, Somalia - the other Low income economy in this batch - ran 8.1% over the twelve months to June 2026, a little over half Sierra Leone's rate.
