Victoria Falls, walking safaris and the Zambezi
Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.
Income per head: GNI per capita, Atlas method: US$1,200 (2025).
Income group: The World Bank classifies Zambia as Lower middle income, region Sub-Saharan Africa, lending category IDA.
Economy size: GDP (current US$): US$28,879,806,220 — about US$28.88 billion (2025).
What prices are doing: Year-on-year inflation was 6.5 percent in July 2026, unchanged from June. Food inflation ran at 6.4 percent and non-food at 6.7 percent — the first month in a while that non-food led.
What the country sells and buys: Zambia exported K165.0 billion and imported K139.0 billion of goods in January–June 2026 — a trade surplus of K26.0 billion on total trade of K304.0 billion, itself down 6.0 percent on the same period of 2025.
Sourced notes — every figure above, with where it was read and when.
Trade agreements (7): Zambia is a member of SADC and COMESA and a signatory to the AfCFTA, giving overlapping regional market access. There is no India-Zambia FTA, though India is an important trade and investment partner, notably in mining.

Indian passport holders need a Zambian visa and must obtain it before travelling — not on arrival. Zambia's Department of Immigration lists India under 'Nationals Requiring Visa Prior to Travel', a category whose visas 'require advance clearance by the Zambian Authorities'. India is on neither of the other two lists: not the 167-entry visa-exempt list, and not the 34-entry list of nationals who may take a visa on arrival or from a Zambian mission abroad — though that second list is real, which is why many nationalities do get a visa on arrival. India's Ministry of External Affairs independently classifies Zambia as e-Visa rather than visa-on-arrival, so both governments' own records agree. Applications go through the department's eServices portal; the published schedule is US$25 single entry, US$40 double and US$75 multiple, each valid ninety days from first issuance. The KAZA UniVisa (shared with Zimbabwe) is real, costs US$50 and runs up to 30 days in any twelve-month period at qualifying entry points for Victoria Falls travel — but India is not among the nationalities the department lists as eligible for it, so it is not a route an Indian passport can take.
Corrected 19 August 2026 — this section previously told an Indian reader the visa was easily obtained 'via Zambia's e-Visa or on arrival', and left the KAZA UniVisa sentence beside it with no eligibility qualifier. A reader following it could have arrived at Lusaka without the advance clearance the department requires. One caution is recorded rather than buried: the department's category and fee pages carry no page-level last-updated stamp, so they cannot fully satisfy the freshness gate this estate applies to entry rules — the fee figures in particular are the exposure if they have moved. The answer in Frequently asked below has been brought in line with this correction.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
Which category India is actually in: Zambia's Department of Immigration splits the world into three lists. India appears on the third — 'Nationals Requiring Visa Prior to Travel' — where the department states that 'Zambian entry visas for nationals whose countries fall under this category require advance clearance by the Zambian Authorities.' India does not appear on the visa-exempt list, and does not appear on the 'Nationals requiring visas on arrival or from Zambian Missions Abroad' list.
The two lists India is NOT on: Checked both, because an absence is only evidence if you look. The visa-exempt list runs to 167 entries and includes Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Malaysia and China but not India. The visa-on-arrival list runs to 34 entries — Brazil, Russia, Thailand, Mexico among them — and does not include India either.
What it costs and where to apply: The department's published schedule: single entry US$25, double entry US$40, multiple entry US$75, transit US$25, day tripper US$10, KAZA UniVisa US$50, gratis visa free of charge. Single, double and multiple entry visas are 'valid for ninety (90) days from the date of first issuance'; a transit visa runs 'a maximum period of seven (07) days'. Applications go through the department's eServices portal.
The KAZA UniVisa, and who may actually use it: The UniVisa is real and the page is right that it exists: US$50, 'valid up to 30 days in any given period of 12 months, as long as the holder remains within Zambia and Zimbabwe', and it 'also covers those who visit Botswana for day-trips through Kazungula Borders'. On the Zambian side it is issued at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport, Victoria Falls Border and Kazungula Border. The catch is eligibility: the department publishes the list of nationalities that may take it — 65 entries, from Andorra to Uruguay — and India is not one of them.
What India's own ministry lists: India's Ministry of External Affairs, in its Visa Facility for Indian Nationals (Ordinary Passports) table, places Zambia in the e-Visa category — not in the visa-on-arrival category — with the remark that 'Persons below the age of 16 cannot apply for an e-Visa. If travelling with an adult, they must be included to the adult's application during the application process.' The MEA page carries a last-updated date of 2nd February, 2026.

Intercity travel uses coaches (Power Tools, Mazhandu, Shalom) and the TAZARA railway toward Tanzania; within Lusaka use blue minibuses and taxis, with Yango and inDrive operating as ride-hailing apps. Zambia drives on the left.
Car vs taxi: Self-driving is popular for safari trips on Zambia's main tarmac routes (4x4 recommended for parks and the wet season); in Lusaka, use Yango, inDrive or hotel taxis rather than driving in traffic.
Money: The kwacha is used for cash and is essential in markets and for minibuses; cards work at hotels, malls and city restaurants, and Airtel and MTN Mobile Money are widely used. Carry cash outside the main cities.
SIM & data: MTN, Airtel and Zamtel are the carriers; register a SIM with your passport at the airport or a shop. Local eSIM support is limited, so a travel eSIM is a useful backup.
Tipping: Tipping around 10% is customary where no service charge is added, and safari guides, trackers and lodge staff are typically tipped at the end of a stay.
Etiquette: Greetings are important and unhurried, often with a handshake (sometimes supporting the right forearm with the left hand as a sign of respect). Use the right hand for giving and receiving and show deference to elders.
Food: Try nshima (maize staple) with relish, grilled or stewed meat, and fresh bream from the rivers; kapenta (small dried fish) is popular. Drink bottled or boiled water and avoid tap water in some areas.
Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”
Zambia is peaceful and welcoming, with Victoria Falls, South Luangwa and the safari circuit well-run; petty theft occurs in Lusaka, so take normal precautions and use guides in the parks.
For nomads: Lusaka has a small but growing nomad scene; English-friendly with lower costs.
Education: Budget international schools; universities affordable.
Healthcare: Basic care very cheap; private improving.
What a job pays: Average monthly earnings were ZMW 6,467 in the 2024 Labour Force Survey — ZMW 6,600 for men and ZMW 6,188 for women. The number to read alongside it: of 3,972,883 employed people, 25.8 percent were formally employed and 74.2 percent informally, so the average describes a minority of the working population well and the majority only loosely.
What prices are doing: Annual inflation was 6.5 percent in July 2026, flat on June, with food at 6.4 percent and non-food at 6.7 percent. Month on month prices rose 0.2 percent. That is a long way down from the 11.2 percent of December 2025.
What the kwacha is worth, and what the central bank is doing: The Bank of Zambia reports that 'the Kwacha appreciated sharply in the first quarter of 2026 against the US dollar', averaging 19.43 to the dollar over the quarter and ending it at 19.12. At its meeting of 11–12 May 2026 the Monetary Policy Committee 'decided to reduce the Monetary Policy Rate by 25 basis points to 13.25 percent'. Gross international reserves stood at USD6.2 billion at end-March 2026, 5.2 months of import cover, up from USD5.5 billion in December 2025.
In rupee-brain terms: Converted at the Bank of Zambia's 2026 Q1 average of 19.43 kwacha to the dollar, the 2024 survey's average monthly earnings of ZMW 6,467 come to roughly US$333 a month. Read that as an order of magnitude, not a 2026 wage: the earnings figure is from the 2024 survey and the rate is from 2026, and two years of Zambian inflation sit between them.
What the visas cost: A budgetable number, since it is unavoidable: US$25 for a single-entry Zambian visa, US$40 double, US$75 multiple, US$10 for a day tripper. All obtained before travel for an Indian passport.
Compared with Zimbabwe: Across the Victoria Falls bridge, Zimbabwe's inflation is running less than half of Zambia's: ZIMSTAT put year-on-year USD inflation at 3.1 percent and ZWG inflation at 3.2 percent in July 2026, against Zambia's 6.5 percent. The catch is what that price stability costs to access — ZIMSTAT's total consumption poverty line was ZWG 1,346.90 per person in July 2026, about US$50.53 at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe's average rate of 26.6552 on 19-08-2026, and Zimbabwe's unemployment rate was 20.7 percent in the Q2 2025 labour force survey against Zambia's 12.9 percent in 2024. Zambia is the more expensive month and the easier one to earn in. Zambia's unemployment rate is from a 2024 annual survey, Zimbabwe's from a Q2 2025 quarterly one; the inflation months match exactly (both July 2026) but the labour figures do not. Stated in the copy, not hidden. Zimbabwe's poverty line is a subsistence threshold, not a wage — it is not comparable with Zambia's average-earnings figure and is not compared with it.

City notes from Amit's own travels — the interactive travelogue holds the full record
Zambia is one of Africa's top copper producers, with cobalt and emeralds, and sits at the centre of the region's critical-minerals story.
Trade framework: Zambia is a member of SADC and COMESA and a signatory to the AfCFTA, giving overlapping regional market access.
India angle: India engages on copper, mining services and pharmaceuticals.
Outlook: copper prices and the energy transition drive the outlook.
The page already names AfCFTA as a future-vector theme. Here is the instrument with dates on it. The African Union records the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area as adopted on 21 March 2018 and entering into force on 22 May 2019. Zambia's own row in the AU's status list reads: signature 10/02/2019, ratification 28/01/2021, deposit 05/02/2021. Of 55 AU member states, 54 have signed, 49 have ratified and 49 have deposited.
India implication: Zambia signed eleven months after adoption and deposited nearly two years after that — it is a committed member but not a first mover, and the lag is the useful signal. An Indian exporter planning to serve southern Africa from a single Zambian base should treat AfCFTA tariff schedules as a medium-term plan rather than a facility to invoice against this year, and should check rules-of-origin implementation with the Zambia Revenue Authority before pricing on continental preference.
Outlook: The gap to watch is between deposit and operational tariff schedules; deposit dates are published, national implementation is not.
The page's Bloc block names SADC as a coordinating body. The trade instrument underneath it is more specific. SADC records that 'The SADC Free Trade Area was achieved in August 2008, when a phased programme of tariff reductions that had commenced in 2001 resulted in the attainment of minimum conditions for the Free Trade Area', at which point '85% of intra-regional trade amongst the partner states attained zero duty'. Thirteen of the fifteen SADC member states are in the FTA; Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo remain outside it. Zambia's standing is deeper than membership: SADC records Zambia as a founding member that hosted the 1980 formation of SADCC, the organisation's precursor, in Lusaka.
India implication: This is the block that changes an Indian landed-cost calculation. Goods finished in Zambia move into twelve other southern African markets at zero duty on most lines; goods shipped from India into those same markets do not. For an Indian firm with regional volume, the arithmetic favours final assembly or packing inside the FTA over direct export into each market — and the DRC exception matters specifically, because Zambia's third-largest export destination is exactly the country that sits outside the FTA.
Outlook: The 85 percent figure is the 2008 threshold, not today's coverage; treat it as the floor the FTA was declared on rather than a current tariff-line count.
Zambia's second bloc is the one the page does not mention, and it is headquartered here. COMESA describes itself as '21 African States, over 600 Million People, Largest Market for Trade & Investment', and gives its own address as 'Ben Bella Road, Lusaka – ZAMBIA'. Both Zambia and Zimbabwe appear in the member-state table, alongside Egypt, Kenya, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Libya, Tunisia and the rest of the twenty-one.
India implication: Overlapping membership is the practical point: Zambia sits inside both SADC and COMESA, so a Zambian-registered entity can face two sets of origin rules and two secretariats' paperwork for the same consignment. That is a cost, but it is also the reason Lusaka is a defensible regional base for an Indian firm — the COMESA secretariat, its trade-facilitation instruments and its officials are in the same city as the company registry, which is not true of any other candidate capital in the region.
Outlook: Watch the SADC–COMESA–EAC Tripartite work, which exists precisely to reconcile the overlap; it is the file that would simplify or complicate this.
The page is right that copper is the structural pillar; the current shape of it is worth the detail. Zambia Statistics Agency names 'copper anodes for electrolytic refining' as the leading export commodity, and refined copper export earnings were K17.3 billion in March 2026, down 10.5 percent on February. The destination split for total export earnings in the first half of 2026 runs Canada 33.0 percent, China 13.7 percent, DR Congo 12.9 percent. Note the product description: anodes for electrolytic refining are unrefined copper going out to be refined elsewhere. ZamStats labels this line by commodity description rather than by HS code, so no HS heading is asserted here.
India implication: Two things follow for an Indian buyer. First, the Canada share is a trading-and-refining routing rather than Canadian consumption, which means the metal is already inside an international offtake system and Indian smelters are competing for tonnes that are largely spoken for. Second, and more usefully, 'anodes for electrolytic refining' is the tell — Zambia is exporting a semi-processed input, which is precisely the gap Indian refining and cable-manufacturing capacity is built to fill. The opening is in refining capacity and in the equipment and reagents that Zambian mines buy, not in bidding for finished cathode.
Outlook: The March 2026 fall of 10.5 percent month on month, against total trade down 6.0 percent for the half year, says volumes and prices are both moving; treat any single month as noise and the half-year direction as the signal.

Yes — and it must be obtained before travelling, not on arrival. Zambia's Department of Immigration lists India under 'Nationals Requiring Visa Prior to Travel', a category whose visas 'require advance clearance by the Zambian Authorities'; India is on neither the visa-exempt list nor the visa-on-arrival list. India's Ministry of External Affairs independently classifies Zambia as e-Visa rather than visa-on-arrival, so apply through the department's eServices portal before departure. The KAZA UniVisa (shared with Zimbabwe) does exist at qualifying entry points for Victoria Falls travel, but India is not among the 65 nationalities the department lists as eligible for it.
Corrected 20 August 2026 — this answer previously said the visa was 'easily obtained via Zambia's e-Visa or on arrival' and carried the KAZA UniVisa line without an eligibility qualifier, wording the Visas & entry section corrected on 19 August 2026: advance clearance is required, and India is not on the KAZA eligibility list. This answer now matches that section.

Zambia uses the Zambian kwacha (ZMW). Capital: Lusaka.
Zambia is a member of SADC and COMESA and a signatory to the AfCFTA, giving overlapping regional market access. There is no India-Zambia FTA, though India is an important trade and investment partner, notably in mining.
Zambia is peaceful and welcoming, with Victoria Falls, South Luangwa and the safari circuit well-run; petty theft occurs in Lusaka, so take normal precautions and use guides in the parks.
Not according to the list that governs it. The KAZA UniVisa is genuine and well priced — US$50, valid up to 30 days in any 12-month period so long as the holder stays within Zambia and Zimbabwe, and it also covers Botswana day trips through the Kazungula borders. On the Zambian side it is issued at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport, the Victoria Falls border and the Kazungula border. But the Department of Immigration publishes the nationalities eligible to take it, and India is not among them; the list runs to 65 entries and covers most of Europe, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Turkey. Plan on an ordinary Zambian visa obtained before travel, and a separate Zimbabwean visa.
Cheaper to live in, dearer to price. Zambia's annual inflation was 6.5 percent in July 2026, flat on June, with food at 6.4 percent and non-food at 6.7 percent — well down from 11.2 percent in December 2025 but still more than double Zimbabwe's, where ZIMSTAT recorded 3.1 percent USD and 3.2 percent ZWG year-on-year for the same month. The Zambian earnings anchor is ZMW 6,467 a month on average in the 2024 Labour Force Survey, which at the Bank of Zambia's 2026 Q1 average of 19.43 kwacha to the dollar is roughly US$333 — an order of magnitude rather than a current wage, since the survey is 2024 and the rate is 2026. Set against that, Zimbabwe's total consumption poverty line was ZWG 1,346.90 per person in July 2026, about US$50.53 at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe's 26.6552 average on 19-08-2026, and its unemployment rate was 20.7 percent in Q2 2025 against Zambia's 12.9 percent in 2024.
