Bureau of Indian Standards — issues IS marks and manages Quality Control Orders for India domestic market.
BIS is a statutory body under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 — Act 11 of 2016, under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution — “An Act to provide for the establishment of a national standards body for the harmonious development of the activities of standardisation, conformity assessment and quality assurance of goods, articles, processes, systems and services and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.” Three functions in one sentence — setting standards, assessing conformity to them, and assuring quality — which is why BIS both writes an IS standard and certifies against it.
The Act’s long title only; no section is quoted. The 2016 Act replaced the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986.
