International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code — IMO regulations governing transportation of hazardous materials by sea.
The IMO describes the IMDG Code as “an international code for the maritime transport of dangerous goods in packaged form, in order to enhance and harmonize the safe carriage”, setting requirements for each substance “covering matters such as packing, container traffic and stowage, with particular reference to the segregation of incompatible substances”. It became mandatory on 1 January 2004 under the SOLAS Convention — the shift that turned it from guidance into law for ships on international voyages. Note the words in packaged form: bulk cargoes are governed by other IMO codes.
