A technique to assess environmental impacts of a product from raw material extraction through production, use, and disposal.
The framework standard is ISO 14040:2006, “Environmental management — Life cycle assessment — Principles and framework”, second edition, published July 2006. ISO’s description sets out the phases an LCA covers: goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment and interpretation, plus reporting and critical review — and notes that the standard does not prescribe detailed methodologies for the individual phases. That gap is deliberate and is why two LCAs of the same product can differ: the framework is fixed, the modelling choices are not.
