Science Based Targets initiative — enables businesses to set emission reduction targets aligned with climate science.
The SBTi describes itself as “a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis”, founded by CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute and WWF. Its targets are framed as ones that “clearly lay out by how much and how fast businesses need to decarbonize”, aligned with reaching net zero by 2050 at the latest.
No definition of “a science-based target” is quoted here — the page cited describes the organisation and the purpose of its targets rather than defining the term. Criteria are set out in the SBTi’s own standards, which are not cited on this page.
