Payment
Single Euro Payments Area — EU-wide payment integration allowing EUR transfers within EU as if domestic transactions.
The ECB describes SEPA as the arrangement by which “customers can make cashless euro payments to anywhere in the European Union – and to a number of non-EU countries – in a fast, safe and efficient way”, covering 41 European countries as of 22 May 2025. It harmonises three instruments: a credit transfer, “a payment transaction from the payer’s account to the payee’s account, initiated by the payer”; an instant credit transfer, which “make[s] funds available in a payee’s account within ten seconds”; and a direct debit, “initiated by the payee based on the payer giving their consent”. Scheme rules are administered by the European Payments Council.
SEPA covers euro payments. It is not a currency-conversion or trade-finance mechanism, and membership of the SEPA area is wider than the EU or the euro area.
