Customs
Designated areas where businesses operate under more liberal regulations including customs duty exemptions.
In India the term is statutory rather than descriptive. The Special Economic Zones Act, 2005 — Act 28 of 2005 — is “An Act to provide for the establishment, development and management of the Special Economic Zones for the promotion of exports and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.” Worth keeping in view when comparing across countries: “special economic zone” is a generic label internationally, covering arrangements that differ widely in what they exempt and who may operate in them, but in India it names a specific legal regime with a governing Act behind it.
India Code publishes the Act itself, which is a stronger source here than an institutional “about us” page: a website describes a body, an Act constitutes it. What is quoted above is the Act’s long title — the purpose Parliament gave it — and nothing more. No section of any Act is quoted or cited on this page, because India Code’s section-level pages did not serve readable text; procedural detail, eligibility and thresholds are in the Act and its rules, not here.
