The work, day to day

What a day looks like depends enormously on the role. An agronomist walks fields, tests soil, and advises on crop choice, spacing, and inputs; a farm manager plans planting and harvest windows, oversees labour and equipment, and manages a budget that has to survive a bad season; a plant breeder runs field trials and tracks generations of crosses toward a trait such as drought tolerance. Extension officers spend much of their time training and troubleshooting directly alongside farming communities, translating research findings into practical, local advice.

A degree in agriculture, agronomy, or a related plant or soil science is the most common route in, often including a placement or a full practical farming year, which tends to matter as much to employers as classroom grades. People without a farming background sometimes arrive through an allied science degree such as biology or environmental science, paired with deliberately sought hands-on farm or laboratory experience. Roles that involve advising on chemical inputs or certifying produce typically require a separate professional registration on top of the degree itself.

People who don't mind weather-dependent, physically active work, and who enjoy troubleshooting living systems that rarely behave predictably, tend to do well here. A common misconception is that agricultural careers mean manual labour alone; much of the field runs on data, economics, and applied research, and roles like agricultural economist or soil scientist look far more like other scientific or analytical careers than like traditional farm work.
