Selling into the EU goes wrong in a small number of predictable places, most of them about who is responsible and what is written down rather than about the detail of any one rule. Twelve questions cover the principle areas. No regulation text is reproduced here and no rule is summarised as if it were the rule — the official EU sources named below govern, and this is orientation rather than legal advice.

Where the official answers live

• Product rules and conformity marking — the European Commission’s single market pages on conformity marking set out which product categories are covered and what the obligations are.
• Chemicals and substances — the European Chemicals Agency is the authority on registration and restriction duties and on who in the supply chain carries them.
• Customs, registration and import VAT — the Commission’s taxation and customs union pages cover trader registration, import procedures and the VAT arrangements for distance selling.
• Data protection — the European Data Protection Board publishes the guidance supervisory authorities apply; the regulation itself is on EUR-Lex. The GDPR fit check is the orientation companion to this one.

What this is not

• Not legal advice, and not a compliance determination. It is a prompt list. Whether any of it applies to you depends on your product, your customers and how you sell.
