Paste the text or type the word count, set a reading speed, and get the minutes. The range underneath matters more than the headline: adult reading speeds for ordinary prose commonly span roughly 200 to 300 words a minute, and dense or technical material runs slower than that for almost everyone.

The arithmetic

• Minutes = words ÷ words per minute. That is the whole calculation.
• Words are counted by splitting the pasted text on whitespace, so hyphenated compounds count as one word and numerals count as words.
• The range shown alongside uses 200, 250 and 300 words a minute as slow, middle and fast reference points for ordinary prose.

Honest limits

• Reading speed varies enormously — by reader, by material, by whether someone is skimming for a fact or reading closely. Treating any single number as authoritative is the mistake this tool tries to make visible by always showing the range.
• Dense material is slower. Technical prose, unfamiliar vocabulary, equations, tables and code all cut speed well below conversational reading, sometimes by half.
• Nothing here reads the text. No complexity score, no readability grade, no language detection. It counts words and divides.
• Nothing you paste leaves the page or is stored — the counting happens in your browser.

If a precise figure matters for your work, measure your own audience rather than trusting any general number, including this one.
