Theses are among the most useful and least findable literature there is: long, thorough, heavily referenced, and scattered across systems that do not talk to each other. This is a search plan — where to look, in what order, and what each source actually holds. Nothing is searched from this page; it routes you to the places that do.
The open sources worth knowing
CORE — aggregates open-access research from repositories worldwide, and is one of the few places that indexes institutional repositories together.
BASE — a large academic search engine covering repository content, run by Bielefeld University Library.
OpenAIRE — the European open science infrastructure, useful for theses and datasets from EU-funded work.
arXiv — preprints in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology and related fields.
SSRN — preprints and working papers across social sciences, economics and law.
DOAJ — the directory of open access journals, for the published versions of what a thesis became.
Shodhganga — the Indian national repository of doctoral theses, run by INFLIBNET.
NDLTD — the international networked digital library of theses and dissertations.
Honest limits
Nothing is searched or fetched from this page. It lists where to go and in what order; the searching is yours.
Coverage is genuinely patchy. Many theses are only in one institutional repository, some are embargoed for years, and older ones are often not digitised at all.
Commercial aggregators hold a great deal that open sources do not, and generally require an institutional subscription. Where you lack access, the institutional repository and the author are the two routes worth trying.
Emailing the author works surprisingly often. Most are pleased that anyone wants to read it.
No source here is ranked by quality, and a thesis being findable says nothing about whether it is good.
