Gold Coast castles, Ashanti gold and warm welcomes
Working abroad from Ghana → — 31 checked official links: emigration clearance, the official register of licensed recruitment agencies, welfare and insurance schemes, missions and labour attaches abroad, and coming home.
Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.
Income per head: GNI per capita, Atlas method: US$2,630 (2025).
Income group: The World Bank classifies Ghana as Lower middle income, region Sub-Saharan Africa.
Economy size: GDP (current US$): US$114,209,905,278.717 - about US$114.21 billion (2025). That is more than four times Guinea's and more than forty times Guinea-Bissau's, the two other West African profiles uplifted in this batch.
India bilateral trade: India-Ghana bilateral trade reached US$7.97 billion in FY2025-26, which the High Commission of India in Accra records as a milestone against the shared objective of doubling trade over five years. The year before, FY2024-25, total trade was US$3,137.29 million - India's exports US$1,346.75 million, India's imports US$1,790.54 million. In the first two months of FY2026-27 (April-May) trade ran at US$1,035.48 million, exports US$242.82 million and imports US$792.66 million.
How fast it is growing: The Ghana Statistical Service puts quarterly GDP growth at 6.4% for 2026 Q1 and annual growth at 6.0% for 2025. Consumer price inflation was 4.6% year on year in July 2026, down 0.7 percentage points on June 2026.
Sourced notes — every figure above, with where it was read and when.
Trade agreements (6): Ghana hosts the AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra and is a member of ECOWAS, giving the AfCFTA symbolic and practical weight here; it also benefits from EU and (historically) US AGOA access. India is a major trade partner but there is no India-Ghana FTA.
Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~69 destinations. ECOWAS member; good regional access.

Indian passport holders need a visa, generally arranged in advance through a Ghanaian mission or the e-Visa portal; Ghana has been expanding visa-on-arrival and e-Visa access. Confirm current requirements before travelling.
e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality
Intercity travel uses STC coaches and the ubiquitous shared 'tro-tro' minibuses and long-distance taxis; within Accra use tro-tros, shared taxis, and the Bolt and Uber ride-hailing apps, plus Yango.
Car vs taxi: In Accra, Bolt and Uber are affordable and remove the hassle of bargaining; self-driving is possible but city traffic and assertive driving make a hired driver or app taxis the easier choice for most visitors.
Money: The cedi is used for most cash transactions; cards work at hotels, malls and larger restaurants in Accra and Kumasi, and mobile money (MTN MoMo) is extremely popular. Carry cash for markets, tro-tros and small vendors.
SIM & data: MTN Ghana, Telecel (formerly Vodafone) and AirtelTigo are the main carriers; SIMs require passport registration and can be bought at Kotoka Airport or shops. eSIM options are limited, so a travel eSIM helps on arrival.
Tipping: Tipping is not deeply ingrained but is appreciated; leave around 5–10% at restaurants without a service charge and tip hotel porters and helpful drivers a few cedis.
Etiquette: Use your right hand for eating, greeting and handing over money, as the left is considered unclean. Ghanaians are warm and value a friendly greeting and handshake, and beckoning is done with the palm down.
Food: Enjoy jollof rice (a point of national pride), banku and tilapia, fufu with light soup, and waakye. Drink sachet or bottled water rather than tap water.
Say hello: English — “Hello” · thanks “Thank you” · how much? “How much?”
Ghana is one of West Africa's most stable and welcoming countries, and Accra and the tourist coast are generally safe; watch for petty theft and scams, and use common sense at night.
For nomads: Accra (Osu, East Legon) and Kumasi host nomads; English-speaking with reliable coworking; a 'Year of Return' draw.
Education: Growing international school market; universities affordable.
Healthcare: Decent quality care; costs moderate for region.
What prices are doing: Consumer price inflation was 4.6% year on year in July 2026, down 0.7 percentage points on June 2026, on the Ghana Statistical Service's own key-indicators panel. Producer prices rose 3.5% year on year in June 2026. Both are decelerating, which is the single most useful thing to know about Ghanaian pricing in 2026.
What the economy is doing under the prices: GDP growth was 6.4% in 2026 Q1 and 6.0% for the 2025 year as a whole. Unemployment stood at 13.0% in the Q3 2025 Labour Force Survey, up 0.4 percentage points on Q2 2025, and multidimensional poverty at 21.9% for the same quarter. Growth and joblessness are both running high at once - the standard reading trap on Ghana.
What the cedi is worth - and a warning about the official page: The most recent row the Bank of Ghana's daily interbank FX page served on 19 August 2026 is dated 30 December 2025: USDGHS buying 10.4448, selling 10.4552, mid rate 10.4500, with the day's weighted median at 10.4500. GBPGHS was 14.0639/14.0790 and EURGHS 12.2764/12.2886 on the same row. Read the date, not just the number - the central bank's own daily page had not refreshed for nearly eight months when this was fetched, so treat 10.45 as a December 2025 marker rather than a 2026 rate.
What a cocoa farmer is paid: COCOBOD's 2025/26 producer price is GH¢2,587.00 per 64kg bag, which it states as GH¢41,392.00 per tonne. This is the administered farmgate price, set by the board rather than by the market, and it is the number that actually moves rural incomes in Ashanti and the Western Region.
Compared with Togo: Ghana's eastern neighbour Togo runs the opposite currency architecture. Ghana floats the cedi and lets it find its level - the Bank of Ghana's own last published interbank mid was 10.4500 to the dollar on 30 December 2025. Togo is one of the eight member states of the West African Monetary Union, listed by the BCEAO as Benin, Burkina, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo, and uses the CFA franc at a fixed 655.957 to the euro; the BCEAO's indicative dollar rate on 18 August 2026 was 563.250 buying and 570.250 selling, and its minimum refinancing rate has been 3.00% since 16 March 2026, with the marginal lending facility at 5.00%. Cross the Aflao border and the exchange-rate risk stops being a rate question and becomes a euro question. The two currency readings are NOT same-day: the Ghana rate is the Bank of Ghana's own most recent published row, dated 30 December 2025, while the Togo/WAEMU rates are dated 18 August 2026. Stated in the copy, not hidden. No cross-rate is derived from the two.

The page already notes that the AfCFTA Secretariat sits in Accra. The instrument behind the address is worth its own dates. The African Union's own status list, dated 22 May 2026, shows Ghana signing the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area on 21 March 2018, ratifying on 7 May 2018 and depositing its instrument on 10 May 2018 - inside seven weeks, and among the first movers. Across the whole list of 55 countries there are 54 signatures, 49 ratifications and 49 deposits. The AU records the Secretariat as based in Accra, Ghana, trading under the agreement commencing on 1 January 2021, and the liberalisation schedule as 90% tariff liberalisation over ten years with a five-year transition, plus a further 7% of sensitive products that must also be liberalised.
India implication: For an Indian exporter the ten-year, 90% schedule is the part that matters, not the headline. Tariff advantage inside AfCFTA accrues to goods that meet its rules of origin, and an Indian-made good landed in Tema does not acquire them by being warehoused there. The play is substantial transformation in Ghana - assembly, formulation, processing that earns originating status - so that the output can move onward into the continental market on AfCFTA terms rather than most-favoured-nation ones. Ghana's early deposit and the Secretariat's Accra address make it the natural place to test that, which is a different reason to be in Accra than the one most Indian firms give.
Outlook: The 7% sensitive-products tail is where the schedule bites last; watch which lines Ghana puts in it, because those are the categories where an Indian competitor keeps its opening longest.
The page's cocoa block is correct about Ghana and misleading about India. On the High Commission of India's own Economic & Commercial Brief, last updated June 2026, Ghana's leading exports to India for January-December 2024 were gold at US$1,123.56 million and crude petroleum oils at US$226.59 million - together over 70% of everything India imported from Ghana. Cocoa is not in that pair. Running the other way, India's leading exports to Ghana over the same months were pharmaceuticals at US$202.20 million, construction machinery at US$159.86 million and rice at US$56.98 million. The relationship totalled US$3,137.29 million in FY2024-25, US$1,346.75 million out and US$1,790.54 million in, then reached US$7.97 billion in FY2025-26; the first two months of FY2026-27 ran at US$1,035.48 million. On the investment side, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre records Indian companies as having invested in 955 projects aggregating US$12.07 billion.
India implication: Read the two directions separately, because they are two different businesses. Inbound, India is a bullion and crude buyer - a commodity counterparty whose exposure is to price, assay and settlement, not to Ghanaian consumer demand. Outbound, India is selling formulated pharmaceuticals, capital equipment and staple rice into a 34-million-person market with 6.4% growth and 4.6% inflation, which is an ordinary distribution-and-registration problem. A firm that plans its Ghana entry off the cocoa story is planning for a trade it is not in.
Outlook: The FY2025-26 jump to US$7.97 billion is heavily gold-weighted; if bullion prices turn, the headline halves without anything changing in the pharmaceutical or machinery lines underneath it.

Bigger than most people assume, and not the thing most people assume. The High Commission of India in Accra, on its Economic & Commercial Brief last updated June 2026, records bilateral trade reaching US$7.97 billion in FY2025-26, up from US$3,137.29 million in FY2024-25 - US$1,346.75 million of Indian exports against US$1,790.54 million of imports. The first two months of FY2026-27, April and May, ran at US$1,035.48 million. What India buys is gold, US$1,123.56 million in January-December 2024, and crude petroleum oils, US$226.59 million - over 70% of the import bill between them, and no cocoa in the pair. What India sells is pharmaceuticals at US$202.20 million, construction machinery at US$159.86 million and rice at US$56.98 million. The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre records Indian companies invested in 955 projects aggregating US$12.07 billion.
Cooling, on Ghana's own numbers. The Ghana Statistical Service puts consumer price inflation at 4.6% year on year in July 2026, 0.7 percentage points below June 2026, with producer prices up 3.5% in June 2026. Growth is running well ahead of that at 6.4% for 2026 Q1 and 6.0% for the 2025 year, while unemployment was 13.0% in the Q3 2025 Labour Force Survey and multidimensional poverty 21.9% in the same quarter. On the currency, be careful with the official page: the most recent row the Bank of Ghana's daily interbank table served on 19 August 2026 was dated 30 December 2025, at 10.4448 buying and 10.4552 selling to the dollar, mid 10.4500 - a December 2025 marker, not a current rate. For the farm economy, COCOBOD's 2025/26 producer price is GH¢2,587.00 per 64kg bag, or GH¢41,392.00 a tonne.
