Facts & figures

Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.

India–Honduras trade: The Embassy of India in Guatemala (accredited to Honduras; brief of May 2025) publishes the full series: total trade US$175.94 million in 2020-21, US$339.02 million in 2021-22, US$288.77 million in 2022-23, US$296.54 million in 2023-24, and US$261.31 million for April 2024–January 2025. India's exports (pharma, cotton yarn, chemicals, vehicles, machinery) dominate — US$265.93 million against US$30.61 million of imports in 2023-24.

Diplomatic upgrade: Honduras formally opened its diplomatic mission in New Delhi on 15 May 2025 — its first in India — and signed a QIP execution MoU in November 2024. Honduras has given written support to India's UNSC non-permanent-seat candidature.

Trade & FTA

Trade agreements (9): Anchored by CAFTA-DR with the US plus Central American integration and a deal with Mexico; its Taiwan FTA lapsed after the 2023 diplomatic switch to Beijing, with China talks following. No India agreement — Indian pharma and two-wheelers enter at MFN rates.

Passport strength: visa-free/VOA to ~138 destinations. Central American focus; limited global reach.

Visas & entry

Good news for Indian passport holders: Honduras grants visa-free entry for up to 90 days — a rarity in Central America. Most Western nationals get the same 90 days under the CA-4 arrangement with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

e-Visa: yes · Visa on arrival: Varies by nationality

Consular channel: India is represented via its Embassy in Guatemala City with an Honorary Consul General in Tegucigalpa; a diplomatic/official-passport visa-waiver agreement has been in place since June 2008. Honduras's per-nationality rule for Indian ordinary passports was not captured from an official Honduran page, so the instrument is not stated here.

Getting around

Comfortable Hedman Alas and Viana coaches connect San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa and Copán; the Galaxy Wave ferry sails from La Ceiba to Roatán and the Utila Dream to Utila. Tegucigalpa's air gateway is now Palmerola (XPL) near Comayagua.

Car vs taxi: Skip self-driving — aggressive traffic and security risks make first-class coaches like Hedman Alas plus Uber or radio taxis the smarter combination. On Roatán, rent a scooter or use colectivo vans.

Money, SIM & tipping

Money: The lempira, named after the indigenous chief who resisted the Spanish; US dollars circulate freely in the Bay Islands. Carry small bills — change is perpetually scarce.

SIM & data: Tigo and Claro dominate — buy a prepaid SIM at a mall kiosk with your passport. Coverage is decent in the cities and Bay Islands, patchier in the mountainous interior.

Tipping: 10% is standard in restaurants (sometimes pre-added as 'servicio'); tip dive masters and guides on Roatán a few dollars. Small lempira notes help everywhere.

Culture & language

Etiquette: A soft 'buenas' greets anyone entering a room; warmth and small talk precede business. Ask before photographing people, especially in Lenca and Garífuna communities.

Food: Baleadas — thick flour tortillas folded over beans, cream and cheese — are the national street food; try sopa de caracol (conch soup) on the coast and fried fish at the roadside stands around Lago de Yojoa.

Say hello: Spanish — “Hola” · thanks “Gracias” · how much? “¿Cuánto cuesta?”

Safety & emergency

Gang and petty crime persist in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula — use Uber or hotel taxis and avoid moving after dark; Copán Ruinas, Roatán and Utila feel far calmer. Keep valuables minimal in transit.

Living, nomad & costs

For nomads: Small but growing nomad community in Tegucigalpa and Roatan Island; internet improving but security concerns.

Education: Inexpensive education with limited international school options.

Healthcare: Low-cost healthcare; private clinics offer good value in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.

Trade deep-dive

Honduras exports coffee, bananas, palm oil, shrimp and apparel from its maquila free zones, and relies heavily on remittances.

Trade framework: Anchored by CAFTA-DR with the US plus Central American integration and a deal with Mexico; its Taiwan FTA lapsed after the 2023 diplomatic switch to Beijing, with China talks following.

India angle: India engages on coffee and apparel sourcing.

Outlook: maquila manufacturing and remittances shape the outlook.

Bloc — CAFTA-DR: Honduras is a member of the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement, the regional framework linking Central American economies with the United States and the Dominican Republic. CAFTA-DR membership anchors Honduras's preferential access to the US market alongside regional Central American trade.

Product — Coffee & Bananas: Coffee and banana cultivation across Honduras's highland and coastal-plain geography form the structural backbone of the country's agricultural export economy, a legacy of longstanding plantation and smallholder farming patterns. These crops function as principal traditional export classes alongside palm oil.

Sector — Maquila Manufacturing: Honduras's maquila free-zone manufacturing sector, spanning apparel and light-industrial assembly, is a structurally significant export and employment base integrated into North American supply chains via the Puerto Cortés gateway. This manufacturing framework anchors a principal structural sector alongside agriculture.

Future vector — Central American Integration: Honduras's position within CAFTA-DR and wider Central American integration frameworks frames a future-vector theme centred on maquila-sector expansion and continued preferential US market access, alongside agricultural-export diversification, Puerto Cortés port-logistics investment and remittance-linked financial-sector development.

Named framework — the Jamastran lesson: a US$26.5 million LoC, US$17.7 million of it formally cancelled

India approved a US$26.5 million Line of Credit in 2014 for the Jamastran River Valley Irrigation Project — MoS Lekhi laid the foundation stone in May 2022 — but disputes between implementing agency M/s Apollo and the Honduran agriculture ministry led EXIM Bank and Honduras to formally cancel the unutilised US$17.7 million. An earlier US$30 million equipment LoC (2006) fared better, with US$26.63 million drawn. The softer instruments have delivered: a NIIT-run IT centre that has trained over 20,000 students since 2008, US$800,000 approved in 2024 for a WASH project in Gracias a Dios, 26 tonnes of HADR material after Tropical Storm Sara (November 2024), and a US$1 million fruit-processing plant now clearing legal review after a March 2025 NABCONS site visit.

India implication: Honduras is the honest case study in LoC execution risk: two-thirds of the flagship irrigation credit died on implementation, while grants, training and small plants shipped. For the estate's readers, the pattern matters more than the headline number.

Outlook: Watch the fruit-processing MoU (under Honduran legal review as of April 2025) and whether the new Delhi mission converts diplomatic presence into a re-cut infrastructure pipeline.
