Two oceans, canal marvels and cloud forests
Official figures, each with its source and the date it was read — the key-facts panel above is rounded and undated.
India–Panama trade: India's mission's bilateral brief (2023 edition) records exports to Panama of US$314.56 million against imports of US$283.35 million — roughly US$598 million two-way. India sells minerals, apparel and textiles, pharmaceuticals, man-made fibres, electricals and medical instruments; it buys iron and steel, teak and wood pulp, aluminium, mineral fuels, hides and skins — much of it moving through the Colón Free Trade Zone.
The diaspora anchor: Around 15,000 PIOs and NRIs — mostly Gujarati and Sindhi communities — live in Panama, the largest Indian-origin population in Central America, with a Hindu temple, a gurudwara and two mosques in Panama City and another temple in Colón. In January 2021 Panama's National Assembly passed a law creating a National Council for Indian ethnicity to advise the government.

City notes from Amit's own travels — the interactive travelogue holds the full record
Panama's economy is built on the Panama Canal and its logistics cluster — the Colón Free Zone, transhipment ports, banking and a flag-of-convenience shipping registry — a services and transit powerhouse.
Trade framework: CAFTA-DR (adjacent), bilateral US, Canada, Central American & several Asian agreements.
India angle: Indian exporters route Latin-American cargo through Panama's canal and free zone.
Outlook: canal-water constraints and its role as a logistics and financial hub are the watch points.
On 5 February 2025 India and Panama signed the MoU on Indian grant assistance for Quick Impact Projects; in May 2025 a multi-party parliamentary delegation led by Dr. Shashi Tharoor met President Mulino and National Assembly President Castañeda, with Panama publicly backing India's UNSC permanent-seat bid; and the June 2025 brief cites a technology-and-innovation line of US$15 million. Panama's financial sector — assets over US$93 billion per the brief — and the US trade-promotion agreement giving direct American-market access frame the commercial case.
India implication: Panama is India's institutional hub for the isthmus: the mission covers three countries, the diaspora is the region's largest, and the canal-plus-Colón logistics complex makes it the natural distribution base for Indian goods into both Americas.
Outlook: Watch the first QIPs under the February 2025 MoU and any canal-adjacent logistics investments; the 20-member inter-parliamentary friendship group (October 2025) keeps the political channel warm.

About 15,000 PIOs and NRIs — the largest Indian-origin population in Central America, mostly Gujarati and Sindhi families in trade and micro-credit, with temples, a gurudwara and mosques in Panama City and Colón. Since January 2021 a National Council for Indian ethnicity, created by law, advises the government.
Per the mission's 2023 brief: US$314.56 million of Indian exports (minerals, textiles, pharma, electricals) against US$283.35 million of imports (steel, teak, aluminium, fuels), much of it routed through the Colón Free Trade Zone — Panama's role is as much distribution hub as end market.
