๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Working and relocating to the United States

Relocating to the United States for work runs through federal immigration law, not a single portal: which visa category applies depends on the job, the employer, and often the worker's home country. This page links only official U.S. government sources โ€” USCIS, the State Department, the Department of Labor, and other agencies โ€” plus a small, clearly separated section of large private job boards.

A correction to what is usually written about this: Schedule A (occupations DOL has pre-certified as facing a labor shortage, letting an employer skip PERM labor-market testing) is still just two occupation groups โ€” physical therapists and professional nurses โ€” defined directly in regulation at 20 CFR 656.5. Despite years of advocacy and a 2024 DOL request for information about expanding it, no broader updated list has been published as of this writing, so this page links the regulatory text and the RFI rather than a nonexistent expanded list.

Employer disclosure data โ€” who is actually filing

The U.S. has no single 'approved employer' list like some countries, but federal disclosure law forces the same information into the open: every Labor Condition Application and PERM filing names the sponsoring employer, and these government data files and search tools are the primary source. This section is deliberately the most link-heavy in the page.

These are raw government data releases (mostly Excel/CSV) and search interfaces, not curated 'best employer' lists โ€” treat filing volume as a proxy for sponsorship activity, not for job quality.

Labor condition and prevailing wage process

Before an H-1B/H-1B1/E-3 or a PERM-based green card petition can be filed, the employer must clear a labor process with DOL: attest to wages and conditions (LCA) or test the labor market and get a wage determination (PERM), both keyed to OFLC's published prevailing wage data.

Cap-exempt and special routes

Several narrower programs sidestep the annual H-1B lottery or address specific fields: university-affiliated employment, physicians serving underserved areas, exchange-visitor obligations, and the narrow shortage-occupation list.

Study to work โ€” F-1, OPT, and CPT

International students on F-1 status can work through Curricular Practical Training during study and Optional Practical Training after graduation, with a STEM extension for qualifying degrees; SEVP certifies which schools may enroll F-1 students at all.

Credential recognition and professional licensing

The U.S. licenses most regulated professions at the state, not federal, level, so recognition of a foreign credential runs through national testing/certifying bodies feeding into individual state boards. Links below cover the national gatekeepers plus a representative sample of state boards.

State licensing boards โ€” sample (medicine / nursing / engineering / bar)

Every U.S. state and territory has its own board with its own rules โ€” the state links here are a representative sample (major population/employment states), not a complete 50-state directory.

Government job boards

USAJOBS is the federal government's official hiring portal (most federal jobs require U.S. citizenship, though some agencies hire noncitizens under specific authorities); a sample of state government careers portals is included for state-level public employment.

Federal civil-service jobs are overwhelmingly restricted to U.S. citizens โ€” check each posting's eligibility before assuming a federal role is a visa-sponsorship route.

General job boards

Large private job-search platforms, kept separate from the official sources above because they are commercial products, not government sources.

Listings and 'visa sponsorship' filters on these platforms are self-reported by employers and not verified by any government agency.

Settlement and practical set-up

Once a visa is secured, everyday life in the U.S. runs on a Social Security number, a tax filing status (with a separate ITIN process for those ineligible for an SSN), a state driver's licence, and โ€” for anyone not covered by an employer plan โ€” Marketplace health coverage rules that vary by immigration status.

Directory of official and semi-official sources, compiled 2026-08-26. Links are to the issuing body wherever one exists. This page states no eligibility, processing time or fee, and is not immigration advice โ€” rules change, and the issuing authority is always the current source.

Coming from one of these countries?

Your own government runs the register of licensed recruiters, the emigration clearance and the welfare fund that apply before you leave. Those pages are written from that side.
