The process of finding patterns or relationships in data — statistical, thematic, or content analysis depending on data type.
Merriam-Webster: “a detailed examination of anything complex in order to understand its nature or to determine its essential features”, and “separation of a whole into its component parts”. From Greek análysis, “loosing, releasing, breaking something down into its elements, solution of a problem”, from analýein, to loosen or dissolve. First recorded 1580. The etymology carries the method: analysis takes something apart. What puts it back together is synthesis — which is why the two words are taught as a pair.
