Structured notes, labels, or codes added to text or data — in bibliographies, qualitative coding, or computational tagging.
Merriam-Webster: “a note added by way of comment or explanation”, and “the act of annotating something”. First recorded in the fifteenth century, in the second sense — the activity before the artefact. That ordering is a fair description of what annotation is for: the value is in the reading it forces, and the note is the residue.
Merriam-Webster is cited as the dictionary of record: where an entry defines a word rather than a position, a dictionary is the primary source for it. The research usage above is this lexicon’s own.
