Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation — new EU regulation covering all product categories with sustainability requirements.
The official title: “Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 establishing a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for sustainable products, amending Directive (EU) 2020/1828 and Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 and repealing Directive 2009/125/EC”. Framework is the key word: ESPR sets up the machinery, and specific product requirements follow in later acts. It replaced the earlier Ecodesign Directive, which covered energy-related products only. The digital product passport is created by Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, which establishes “a framework for the setting of ecodesign requirements for sustainable products”, and defines the passport as “an information system that makes information available to actors along the entire value chain.” The definition is deliberately about access, not content: which products need a passport, and what it must hold, are set product group by product group under the framework rather than in the Regulation itself.
