Food Safety and Standards Authority of India — mandatory registration for all food businesses in India.
FSSAI describes itself as established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, “which consolidates various acts and orders that had hitherto handled food-related issues across various Ministries and Departments”. That consolidation is the point of the body, not a footnote to it: the Act repealed the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954 along with the Fruit Products, Meat Food Products, Vegetable Oil Products, Edible Oils Packaging, Solvent Extracted Oil and Milk and Milk Products orders, moving India “from a multi-level, multi-departmental control system to a single line of command”. FSSAI was created “for laying down science-based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import”. Its administrative ministry is Health and Family Welfare, its head office is in Delhi, and enforcement is shared with the State Food Safety Authorities — so an exporter into India deals with a central standard and a state enforcer.
