The work, day to day

The daily rhythm depends heavily on the specific role: a consultant's day is often structured around client meetings, building analysis in spreadsheets and slide decks, and iterating a recommendation under a tight deadline, while an operations director's day is dominated by reviewing performance metrics, running process meetings, and unblocking problems that cut across departments. Product managers sit between engineering, design, and commercial teams, translating customer needs into a roadmap and constantly negotiating trade-offs. Across nearly all these roles, a large share of time goes into meetings, written communication, and building a case that colleagues with competing priorities will actually act on.

The postgraduate business degree is a well-worn route into consulting, general management, and strategy roles, particularly for people switching fields, but plenty of people move up into these roles from within a function — finance, operations, product — without ever completing a postgraduate degree at all. Investment banking recruiting tends to be the most structured and calendar-driven path, running through defined internship and analyst programmes at banks. For product management and operations roles, a track record of shipping something and being able to explain the reasoning behind decisions usually matters more than the credential alone.

A common misconception is that these roles are primarily about big strategic thinking; most of the actual work is coordination — clarifying who owns what, keeping a plan updated as reality changes it, and communicating clearly enough that a large group of people can move in the same direction without constant supervision. People who thrive tend to be comfortable holding several competing priorities at once and making a decision with incomplete information, rather than waiting for certainty that rarely arrives in time to matter.

A realistic first five years

A first role after training often means a junior analyst or associate position, building slides and models for a senior colleague's meeting, gathering data, and absorbing far more context than any single task requires. The early struggle is translating broad frameworks learned in coursework into a specific, messy organisation with its own history, politics, and constraints that no case study captures.

By the third and fourth years, a track usually firms up, whether consulting, general management, product, finance, or operations, and responsibility grows from supporting a project to owning a piece of one, often managing a small team or a client relationship directly. Judgment sharpens through repeated exposure to decisions with real trade-offs and no clean answer.

By year five, a steady practitioner can lead a project or a function with real autonomy and is trusted in rooms where decisions actually get made. The fork ahead is whether to specialise deeper into one function, broaden across the business toward general management, or move into founding or leading something of their own.

Frequently asked

Is the MBA still worth it?

For top-10 schools, yes — ROI typically 3-5 years for Indians, faster for Americans. For tier-2 and below, increasingly questionable given executive-education alternatives.
