The work, day to day

The work centers on keeping a production or service system running smoothly: reviewing performance metrics, adjusting schedules and staffing, resolving bottlenecks, and running improvement projects when a process consistently underperforms. Meetings are frequent and cross-functional, since operations managers coordinate with procurement, quality, sales, and frontline supervisors to balance capacity against demand. Much of the job is reactive troubleshooting layered on top of planned, longer-term improvement work, so a typical day mixes firefighting with quieter analysis of where a process can be tightened.

A common study route runs through an engineering, business, or supply chain degree, often followed by exposure to process-improvement methods learned on the job rather than purely in a classroom. Many operations managers begin in a frontline or analyst role within a plant, warehouse, or service center, and are promoted into management once they show they can diagnose and fix real process problems. Certifications in quality or process-improvement methods can help, but track record on the floor tends to matter more for advancement.

People who thrive tend to be comfortable moving between big-picture strategy and granular, on-the-floor detail within the same day, often within the same conversation. A common misconception is that the role is purely administrative; in practice much of the value comes from noticing small inefficiencies that others walk past, and having the credibility with frontline staff to actually change how work gets done rather than simply reporting on it.

A realistic first five years

A first role usually sits on the floor of an operation, supervising a shift, a line, or a small team, and learning that a process that looks clean on a chart rarely runs that cleanly in practice. Early credibility comes from showing up consistently, solving small problems fast, and understanding the work well enough that a team's respect is earned rather than assumed.

A few years in, someone typically manages a larger unit or a defined process end to end, accountable for output, quality, and a team's performance rather than just their own. A specialism in a particular kind of operation, whether manufacturing, service, or logistics, along with a structured approach to improvement, starts to define a personal reputation within the wider organisation.

By year five, competence looks like a manager who can run a substantial operation and its people with real independence, though decisions spanning multiple sites or functions still typically involve more senior leadership. The fork from here runs toward deepening into one operational specialism, broadening across functions, or moving toward senior leadership over a wider operation.

Frequently asked

Six Sigma — still relevant?

Yes for manufacturing and healthcare; less so in software (where Lean Startup principles dominate). Six Sigma Black Belt remains a hiring filter at major manufacturers.
