Cloud Computing

Curated by Vinod Kumar Jain & Amit Jain · All Frontier Global · free, no login

Cloud computing delivers IT services (compute, storage, networking, AI/ML) on demand over the internet from hyperscale data centres. It is the dominant infrastructure paradigm of modern technology.

The work, day to day

Much of the work happens through a cloud provider's console and command-line tools, writing infrastructure configuration as code, automating deployment pipelines, and monitoring dashboards for performance, cost, and security anomalies. Site reliability and DevOps engineers are often on rotation to respond when something breaks, so the rhythm includes stretches of calm project work interrupted by incident response, followed by writing up what went wrong so it does not happen again. Security engineers spend more time auditing access controls and configurations against a hardening standard, while architects translate a business requirement into a system that is secure, resilient, and affordable to run at scale.

Most people arrive through a computer science or software engineering background, though a meaningful share move in sideways from systems administration or general IT roles by building hands-on experience with cloud platforms and picking up vendor certifications along the way. Certifications from the major cloud providers are widely used as a credible, verifiable signal for a first role, especially for candidates without a traditional computing degree. A portfolio of personal projects that show working, deployed infrastructure tends to carry real weight, since the skills are practical and demonstrable outside formal study.

A common misconception is that cloud work is mostly about a single provider's tools; the underlying skills — networking, security, automation, and systems thinking — transfer across providers, and people who thrive tend to be the ones who understand what is happening underneath the console rather than only knowing which buttons to click. That understanding matters most during an outage, when the console is unhelpful or misleading and reasoning from first principles is what actually finds the fault.

A realistic first five years

A first role usually means supporting infrastructure someone else designed, provisioning resources, fixing configuration errors, and being on the receiving end of alerts at inconvenient hours while learning how a system behaves under real load. The early struggle is the sheer surface area: a small misconfiguration in one service can quietly cascade into an outage somewhere else entirely.

By the third and fourth years, a direction usually firms up, such as architecture, security, reliability, or migration work, and the engineer starts designing systems rather than just maintaining them, with growing input into decisions about cost, resilience, and scale. Judgment sharpens through outages and near-misses, which teach lessons no design document quite captures.

By year five, a steady engineer can design and own a significant piece of infrastructure with real independence and is often the person consulted before a major architectural decision. The fork is whether to specialise further into security or reliability, broaden into solutions work across many systems, or move into leading a platform team.
