Much of the work is building and maintaining the automated systems that let software move from a developer's laptop into reliable production use. That means writing and maintaining infrastructure as code, configuring pipelines that test and deploy changes automatically, and setting up monitoring so problems surface before users notice them. When something breaks, the work shifts quickly into incident response: diagnosing root cause under time pressure, then writing up what happened afterward so the same failure is harder to repeat. Constant collaboration with development teams is central, since the goal is making other people's software easier and safer to ship.
Most people arrive at this work from either a software engineering background or a systems administration background, then specialise as they gain comfort with automation and infrastructure. Practical, demonstrable skill with scripting, cloud platforms, and automation tools tends to matter more than any single credential, so personal infrastructure projects and contributions to open tooling are common ways to show readiness. Many first roles are broader generalist engineering positions that gradually shift toward platform and reliability work as an interest and aptitude for it becomes clear. Being part of an on-call rotation early on is a normal part of learning the discipline.
A first role usually means supporting pipelines and infrastructure someone else built, fixing broken builds, responding to deployment failures, and learning how a system behaves under real operational pressure rather than in a tidy diagram. The early struggle is the breadth of the job: a beginner needs working knowledge of code, infrastructure, and process all at once, with few clean boundaries between them.
By the third and fourth years, a direction usually firms up, such as platform engineering, reliability, release management, or security-adjacent work, and the engineer starts designing pipelines and infrastructure rather than just maintaining them. Judgment sharpens through outages and near-misses, and the practitioner learns to balance speed of delivery against the stability of the systems everyone else depends on.
By year five, a steady engineer can own a platform or a significant piece of infrastructure with real independence and is often consulted before major changes. The fork is whether to specialise further into reliability or security, broaden into platform architecture, or move into leading a team.
DevOps is a culture/practice. SRE (originated at Google) is an implementation. Platform Engineering is the latest evolution focused on internal developer experience and self-service infrastructure.
