The work, day to day

For teachers, the day centers on delivering planned lessons, managing a room full of different needs and attention spans at once, and assessing what actually landed through grading and informal checks for understanding. Planning happens largely outside the classroom itself: designing lessons, adapting materials for different learners, and communicating with parents or guardians and colleagues. Administrators spend their time on scheduling, staffing, budgets, and policy compliance that keep a school functioning, while curriculum designers and instructional designers work on materials and structure rather than direct delivery. Researchers analyse learning data and write up findings meant to inform how any of this is done.

Teaching typically requires both a subject or education degree and a separate teaching qualification that includes supervised practice in a real classroom before independent responsibility begins. School administrators nearly always come up through teaching first, building classroom credibility over time before moving into leadership. Curriculum and instructional design roles draw people from either a teaching background or an adjacent field such as instructional technology, while education research roles typically expect graduate study. EdTech product roles tend to reward people who combine some understanding of classrooms with product or technical skill, since the work sits between the two worlds.
