The work, day to day

What the job looks like day to day depends heavily on the track. Clinical and counselling psychologists spend their time on assessment, therapy sessions, case notes, and treatment planning, usually within a structure of ongoing supervision. Researchers design studies, recruit and run participants, analyse data statistically, and write results up for review by peers. UX researchers interview users, run usability tests, and synthesise findings into recommendations a product team can act on, while industrial-organisational psychologists run workplace assessments and surveys and advise on team or organisational design. Forensic psychologists conduct assessments tied to legal proceedings and write reports that may be used in court.

An undergraduate psychology degree covers the foundations across these subfields, including research methods and statistics, which turn out to matter as much as the content itself. Clinical and counselling practice requires further supervised postgraduate training and licensure through the relevant regulatory body before someone can practise independently — this part is close to universal. Research and UX-research tracks lean more on a postgraduate research degree or a strong portfolio of studies and methods experience, with UX roles often entered through an internship or a portfolio of usability work rather than clinical credentialing.

People who thrive tend to be genuinely curious about why people behave as they do, and comfortable holding statistics and research methods alongside people skills rather than treating them as opposites. A common misconception is that psychology is mostly reading people or applying common sense; in practice the discipline rests on research methods and evidence as much as on empathy, and a lot of training is about not trusting intuition until it has been checked.
