The work, day to day

Work in this field is hands-on and often tied to water, weather, and biological cycles: monitoring fish stocks or farmed populations, checking water quality, feeding schedules, and health indicators, and recording data that feeds into stock assessments or farm management decisions. Hatchery managers oversee breeding and early-life stages under close environmental control, while quality control specialists inspect catches or harvests against safety and grading standards before sale. Fisheries economists and trade compliance staff work more with data, contracts, and regulation, tracking quotas, certification requirements, and market prices. Fieldwork, laboratory testing, and paperwork typically all belong to the same working week.

Common entry routes include a degree in fisheries science, aquaculture, marine biology, or a related life-science field, often combined with practical experience gained through fieldwork placements, hatchery internships, or work on a fishing or farming operation. Technical and site-based roles sometimes start without a full degree, building up through on-the-job training under an experienced manager. Regulatory and export-facing roles, such as trade compliance or quality control, typically add certification tied to food-safety or export standards. Because the sector is regionally organized around coastlines, rivers, and farm clusters, local reputation and hands-on experience often matter as much as formal study.

People who thrive tend to be comfortable with physical, outdoor work and irregular hours driven by tides, spawning cycles, or harvest windows, alongside the patience for careful record-keeping. A common misconception is that aquaculture is a simple alternative to wild fishing; in practice, farmed production involves its own demanding engineering, disease-management, and water-quality challenges that require just as much technical skill as managing a wild fishery.
