The work, day to day

Day to day, the work moves between drafting floor plans, choosing materials and finishes, and coordinating with architects, contractors, and suppliers so a space comes together on schedule. Designers build mood boards and renderings to communicate a concept, then test it against budget, structural limits, and accessibility standards. Site visits check that work matches drawings, and much of the week goes into reading product specifications, tracking lead times on furniture and fixtures, and resolving the gap between what a client imagines and what a building actually allows.

Most designers study a design or interior architecture programme covering drafting, space planning, materials, and design history, with a portfolio of real or studio projects mattering as much as the credential itself. Entry usually runs through an internship or junior seat at a design studio, architecture practice, or furniture and retail company, assisting on drawings and sourcing before leading a project. In many places, commercial work tied to life-safety and accessibility codes requires formal registration or a licence to stamp drawings, so that track adds supervised experience beyond study.

People who thrive tend to enjoy balancing taste with hard constraints: a beautiful idea still has to fit a budget, a structural wall, and a building code. A common misconception is that the job is mostly picking colours and furniture; in practice a large share of it is technical coordination, measuring, and problem-solving between what is imagined and what a space can physically support.
