The work, day to day

The work covers drafting press materials or content calendars, coordinating with media contacts and platforms, and producing or overseeing audio, video, or written content through to release. Practitioners monitor coverage and public reaction, brief spokespeople before public appearances, and manage timelines across multiple campaigns or productions running at the same time. Collaboration runs across writers, producers, designers, and leadership, with a constant judgment call about what to say, through which channel, and to which audience.

A degree in mass communication, media studies, or a related field is common, though entry also comes through direct production, writing, or on-air experience built outside a classroom. Internships at media outlets, agencies, or in-house communications teams are a typical door in, and a portfolio of published work, produced media, or managed campaigns tends to matter more over time than the original credential. Careers often move between journalism-adjacent, advertising-adjacent, and public-relations-adjacent work before settling into a specialty.

People who thrive tend to work comfortably across formats and audiences, staying calm under the pressure of a fast-moving news cycle or a live production deadline. A common misconception is that the field is simply journalism or advertising by another name; much of the actual daily work is coordination and editorial judgment about timing, tone, and the right channel for a given audience.

A realistic first five years

A typical first role sits inside a communications or production team, drafting press materials, scheduling content, or assisting on a shoot, with a senior colleague reviewing anything before it goes out. The early work builds a feel for audience and tone across formats, and for how much coordination sits behind a single public-facing message or broadcast segment.

A few years in, someone usually owns a channel, an account, or a production role outright, managing a publication calendar or a shoot from planning through delivery. Judgement about tone, timing, and audience becomes a real asset here, and a body of visible, attributable work starts to carry more weight than the breadth of a general communications background.

By year five, the honest picture is a communicator who can run a campaign, an account, or a production largely without supervision, while a crisis or an organisation-wide message still usually goes through someone more senior. The fork opens toward deepening into one medium or account, broadening across formats and channels, or moving into leading a communications or production team.
