The work, day to day

A physiotherapist's day is built around assessing how someone moves, why it hurts or doesn't work the way it should, and building a plan to change that: taking a history, testing range of motion and strength, applying hands-on manual therapy, and prescribing exercises the patient will practise between sessions. Much of the job is tracking progress against functional goals over repeat visits rather than a single encounter, and adjusting the plan as it goes. It usually involves close coordination with doctors, occupational therapists, coaches, or teachers depending on the setting, plus a steady amount of documentation to justify and record the care given.

Entry runs through an undergraduate or professional physiotherapy degree that includes substantial supervised clinical placements across different specialities, followed by registration with the relevant regulatory or professional body, which is generally required before independent practice. Most new graduates start with a general caseload in a clinic or hospital, handling a mix of musculoskeletal and general rehabilitation cases, before moving toward a specialised stream such as sport, paediatrics, neurological, or geriatric care through further training, mentorship, or a dedicated post.

People who thrive tend to enjoy a mix of hands-on physical work and steady relationship-building, since recovery is usually gradual and depends on a patient trusting the plan enough to keep doing the exercises at home. A common misconception is that physiotherapy is close to massage; in practice, diagnostic reasoning about why a movement is impaired, and designing an exercise programme that progresses safely, is the core skill, with manual therapy playing a supporting role alongside other techniques.
