The work, day to day

Day to day work blends marketing, coordination, and problem-solving under tight seasonal pressure. Destination marketers plan campaigns and work with local partners to promote a place, tour operators design itineraries and manage logistics for groups, and travel product managers negotiate with hotels, transport providers, and activity operators to build packages that work at a given price. Sustainable tourism officers assess environmental and community impact, while OTA and travel tech specialists manage listings, pricing, and booking platforms. Much of the work involves juggling many moving parts at once and adjusting quickly when weather, demand, or a partner falls through.

The typical route runs through a degree in tourism, hospitality, or business, though many people enter through hospitality or travel-industry jobs and work upward through experience rather than credentials alone. Entry-level roles in reservations, guiding, or destination marketing teams are common starting points, and language skills or firsthand travel experience often matter as much as formal study. Sustainable tourism and travel tech roles increasingly draw people from environmental studies or software backgrounds who add tourism-specific knowledge on the job, since the field rewards practical familiarity with how travellers actually behave over pure theory.

People who thrive enjoy variety and unpredictability, since travellers, seasons, and destinations rarely behave the same way for long. A common misconception is that the work is essentially a permanent holiday; in practice it means solving other people's logistics problems, often under time pressure, while the destination itself becomes background rather than something experienced as leisure. Calm improvisation under pressure tends to matter more than any formal qualification.

A realistic first five years

A first role commonly sits inside a tour operator, a destination organisation, or a travel platform, coordinating bookings, building itineraries within a template, or supporting a marketing campaign under a more senior colleague's direction. Early competence is built by seeing how many moving parts, transport, accommodation, local partners, sit behind what a traveller experiences as a single simple trip.

A few years in, someone typically owns a destination, a product line, or a set of partner relationships outright, designing offerings and being judged on bookings or satisfaction rather than just execution. A specialism, whether a region, a traveller segment, or a function like sustainable tourism or digital platforms, sharpens here, and a personal network of local partners starts to matter enormously.

By year five, the honest picture is someone who can run a destination or a product line independently and defend its performance, though large-scale destination strategy still typically involves wider stakeholder coordination. The fork from here runs toward deepening into one destination or traveller segment, broadening across products, or moving toward leading a tourism or travel organisation.

Frequently asked

Tourism management as digital nomad path?

Outstanding fit — many roles inherently remote (OTA product management, content, travel-tech). Plus the discipline understands the lifestyle better than most.
