The work, day to day

Daily work involves writing and testing code, fixing bugs, and translating designs or requirements into working pages and features. Frontend and UI engineers focus on layout, interactivity, and how a page behaves across devices and browsers, backend developers build the servers, databases, and APIs that power the site behind the scenes, and full-stack developers move between these layers as needed. Web performance engineers focus specifically on load times and responsiveness, since a slow page loses visitors quickly. Collaboration with designers, product managers, and other engineers is constant, along with routine use of version control, browser developer tools, and automated testing to catch problems before they reach visitors.

Many developers study computer science formally, but the field is unusually open to self-taught paths, bootcamps, and online curricula, since a working portfolio of live sites or applications can substitute for a degree in many hiring conversations. A personal project, a contribution to an open-source codebase, or a well-built portfolio site often opens doors that a resume alone does not. Early roles frequently come through internships, freelance client work, or junior positions where developers learn a company's specific stack on the job. Specialising toward frontend, backend, or performance work tends to happen gradually as developers discover which problems they enjoy solving.

People who thrive enjoy constant small problem-solving and are comfortable with tools and frameworks shifting under them on a regular basis. A common misconception is that web development is mostly about visual design; in practice most of the daily effort is logic, data handling, and debugging, with visual design forming only a portion of a much larger system. Reading documentation and other people's code carefully is a core daily skill.
