Paste a DOI, or search a topic, and this pulls the record from Crossref’s public API — authors, journal, year, citation count, abstract where the publisher supplied one, and the reference list where it is open. The citation is copy-ready. The optional AI explanation is a drafting aid, not a reading: it has the metadata, not the paper.

Where each part comes from

• Metadata and references come from Crossref’s public API, requested through this site’s own same-origin proxy so your browser never contacts them directly. Crossref is the DOI registration agency for scholarly publishing; what it holds is what publishers deposited.
• The citation is assembled from those fields — authors, year, title, container, DOI — in a plain author-date shape. It is a starting point, not a style guide: your department’s required style will differ in punctuation and ordering.
• The AI explanation is a drafting aid. It receives the title, authors, journal, year and abstract if one exists — never the paper, because we do not have it. It cannot tell you whether the work is sound, replicated or superseded. Read the paper.
• This is one of six tools on the estate that use the network. It talks only to this site’s own endpoints — nothing you type goes to a third party directly, and nothing is stored. The other fifty-seven run entirely in your browser.

Honest limits

• Crossref coverage is uneven. Abstracts are often absent because the publisher never deposited one; reference lists appear only where the publisher opted into open references. A thin record means a thin deposit, not a thin paper.
• Nothing here judges quality. Citation counts measure attention, including the attention that retraction attracts. This page does not check retraction status, and you should.
• Search results are Crossref’s relevance ranking, not ours and not a systematic review. For anything that matters, search a proper index too.
• If the lookup fails, the page says so. It does not invent a citation, a title or an author — a fabricated reference is worse than no reference.

Bibliographic metadata and references come from Crossref’s public REST API, fetched at request time through this site’s own proxy and never cached here. Links resolve through doi.org. The AI explanation has no citations because it has none to give — it is a language model reading the same metadata you can see.

Exactly two request forms are used, and only these two: https://api.crossref.org/works/ followed by the DOI for a single record, and https://api.crossref.org/works?query= followed by your words for a topic search. Both go out through this site’s own proxy, so your browser never contacts Crossref itself. Outbound paper links are built as https://doi.org/ plus the DOI and nothing else.
