Currency quotes hide their cost in the rate, not the fee line. Paste a mid-market reference rate you looked up, enter the rate you were actually offered and the amount, and this measures the gap. No rate is fetched here and none is stored: the tool compares your quote against your reference, at the moment you took both.
The arithmetic, in order
Both rates must run in the same direction: how many units of the currency you are buying you get for one unit of the currency you are selling. If your quote is the other way up, divide 1 by it first.
You receive = amount × offered rate · At mid you would receive = amount × mid rate
Cost of the spread = the difference between those two, shown in both currencies
All-in cost = cost of the spread + any explicit fee · All-in % = all-in cost ÷ amount × 100
Honest limits
No live rate is fetched, and none is embedded. The mid-market figure is yours to look up — the estate’s market page carries reference rates, as do the major financial data sites. Take both numbers at the same moment or the comparison is meaningless.
Rates move constantly. A margin measured this morning tells you about this morning’s quote. It is evidence about a provider’s pricing, not a rate you can rely on later.
The earlier version of this page promised to compare bank against Wise against Revolut against a forex card. That would mean embedding each provider’s margin, which changes constantly and by corridor and by amount. The comparison was dropped rather than faked. To compare providers, get a live quote from each and run each through this tool.
Watch what is excluded from the quote you were given — receiving-bank charges, intermediary fees on the correspondent chain, and card-scheme markups often sit outside the rate entirely.
Sources
No rate source is called and none is mirrored — both rates in the calculation are ones you typed. For a reference mid-market rate to compare against, the estate’s market page is the internal starting point; any major financial data provider serves as well. Take the reference and the quote at the same moment.
