India–Egypt trade relationship no FTA, PTA, or CEPA exists

Rendered from the All Frontier Global FTA registry · researched from official sources, August 2026 · every figure below carries a numbered source

NO AGREEMENT
Status record: this page documents the current state of the relationship, not a concluded trade agreement — there is nothing here to summarise as tariff schedules or rules of origin because none exist yet.

No trade agreement (FTA/PTA/CEPA) exists between India and Egypt, and none is under formal negotiation as of 20 August 2026. Seventeen independent sources were checked, including a comprehensive dedicated tracker of every Indian FTA in effect, under negotiation, or proposed — Egypt appears in none of its categories[16]. The relationship instead sits at the strategic-partnership / target-setting stage.

At a glance

The agreement

India-Egypt CECA (Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement)

NO SUCH NAMED AGREEMENT OR PROCESS WAS CORROBORATED. No FTA, PTA, or CEPA/CECA exists between India and Egypt, and none was found to be under formal negotiation as of 2026-08-20.

Parties: India and Egypt

17 independent sources were checked, including a comprehensive, dedicated India-FTA tracker (India Briefing's 'India's Free Trade Agreements: Updates in 2025') that lists every country/bloc with which India has an FTA/CEPA in effect, under negotiation, or proposed — down to minor cases like Qatar ('exploring') and India-SACU ('proposed'). Egypt does not appear in that list in any category. Half a dozen other India-Egypt-specific trade articles (Middle East Observer, TV BRICS, Daily Pioneer, IAS Gyan, Middle East Briefing) were checked and each explicitly notes no FTA/PTA is referenced in the relationship.

Confidence: high — absence corroborated across a comprehensive dedicated tracker plus multiple independent bilateral-relationship sources

Status in detail

NO TRADE AGREEMENT (FTA/PTA/CEPA) EXISTS OR IS UNDER FORMAL NEGOTIATION. The relationship is at the strategic-partnership / target-setting / dialogue stage. The one concrete agreement-track item found is a narrower LOCAL-CURRENCY TRADE SETTLEMENT pact, still being pursued (not signed) as of the most recent source (2026-05-14).

The netcup skeleton (spine source, india-egypt-ceca.php) describes a named 'India-Egypt CECA' in 'Proposal stage' with 'BRICS+ accession 2024 strengthens framework dialogue', a 'scoping target 2026', and a 'framework-launch target 2027-28', including a specific 'Suez Canal Authority transit framework' chapter. NONE of this — the CECA name, the scoping process, the 2026/2027-28 target dates, or a Suez-transit chapter — was corroborated by any source in this research pass. This is the single most important correction this record makes: treat the skeleton's CECA/scoping/framework-launch claims as unverified and most likely fabricated, not as fact. See conflicts[0].

What Actually Exists

Strategic Partnership

India and Egypt elevated bilateral relations to a 'Strategic Partnership' in a two-step process in 2023, covering political/security, economic, scientific/academic, and cultural pillars (four-pillar framing per the official MEA-linked transcript).

Step 1:[5][6]

Step 2:[8][7]

Brics Context:[15][14]

Local Currency Trade Pact in Progress:[1][14]

Strategic Dialogue Mechanism:[2]

Legacy 1978 Trade Agreement Claim:[12]

Investment

Indian investment into Egypt is cited with a rising but non-reconciled spread of figures across sources; not blended into one number.

Figures

Company Count Conflict:[2]

Flagship Theme:[8][6][2]

Sectors

Fertilizers

Egypt exports fertilizers to India (Egypt is a major regional phosphate/fertilizer producer).

Figures

Confidence: medium-high — two independent-year data points, consistent direction and trend[12][11]

Mineral Fuels Lng

Bidirectional — Egypt exports mineral fuels/petroleum products to India, and India (a major refiner) also exports mineral fuels/petroleum products to Egypt.

Current Figures Cy2025:

No current (2025/2026) figure specifically broken out for LNG (as distinct from the broader 'mineral fuels, oils, distillation products' HS category) was found in this pass. The only LNG-specific figure found is from the stale FY2011-12 Business Standard article (USD 1.97 billion combined 'crude oil and LNG', 14 years old) — see trade.historical_note_not_current. Treat current LNG-specific trade value as an unsourced gap.

Confidence: high for the current mineral-fuels category totals (UN COMTRADE); the record does not claim a current LNG-specific figure[10][11]

Wheat:[14]

Pharma:[17]

Other Named Sectors Cy2025 Comtrade

India to Egypt Top Categories:

Egypt to India Top Categories:

Meat as India's single largest export category to Egypt (USD 767M, 2025) was not anticipated by the task's named sectors (fertilizers/LNG/wheat/pharma) but is the single largest current line item found in this research pass and is recorded for completeness.

Qualitative Growth Sectors Recurring Across Sources:

Confidence: high for the COMTRADE figures; low/qualitative for the 'growth sectors' list, which is aspirational framing repeated across strategic-partnership coverage rather than confirmed current trade lines[10][11]

Trade target

USD 12 billion in bilateral trade — this figure is extremely consistent across nearly every source found (7 of 7 sources that cite a target number say USD 12 billion), making it the most robustly corroborated single fact in this record.

Target Year Conflict

The USD 12B figure itself is stable, but the TARGET YEAR keeps shifting forward with each restatement, rather than pointing at one fixed deadline.

Framing 1

As of: 2023 (strategic partnership elevation)

by 2028 (five years from 2023)

Sources:

Framing 2

As of: 2025-03-19 (Goyal–El Khatib meeting)

within five years of March 2025 (~2030)

Baseline Cited: USD 4.2 billion in 2024, i.e. the target represents nearly tripling trade

Sources:

Framing 3

As of: 2026-05-14 (Modi–Abdelatty meeting, BRICS FMs' gathering)

over the coming five years from May 2026 (~2031)

Baseline Cited: trade 'previously exceeded USD 7 billion' (peak year not specified)

Sources:

Not reconciled to one deadline in this pass. Recorded as three parallel restatements — see conflicts[1]. The pattern is consistent with a target that is being missed on the original 2028 trajectory (actual trade fell to ~USD 4.2B in 2024, well short of the path to USD 12B by 2028) and is being re-anchored with each high-level meeting rather than held to a fixed date.

Trade flows

At least six non-reconcilable trade-value data points were found, spanning Indian fiscal-year and calendar-year bases, full-year and partial-year windows, and different aggregators. Per the provenance rule, they are recorded separately below and NOT averaged or blended.

Best-attributed series methodologically (explicit UN COMTRADE sourcing, explicit units, explicit 'last updated August 2026'), but on a calendar-year basis, not directly comparable to the Indian-FY-labeled series above without a basis caveat.

Confidence: medium-high

Historical Note Not Current

India-Egypt bilateral trade, FY2011-12 (14 years stale — included ONLY as historical color, explicitly NOT part of the current trend)

Figures:

This figure happens to numerically match the CY2024 figure above (USD 4.2 billion) 13 years apart. This is flagged as a coincidence, not verified as any kind of data error — but it should not be mistaken for a current number.

Org: Business Standard (article dated 2012)

Accessed: 2026-08-20[9]

No single figure is designated as THE headline in this record, unlike the EFTA record's FY2024-25 series. FY2024-25 (USD 4.88B, IAS Gyan) is the most complete Indian-FY-labeled recent figure and is paired with the target framing, but is only medium-confidence (single secondary aggregator). CY2025 UN COMTRADE (~USD 5.04B) is the most transparently sourced but calendar-year-based. Both are presented; neither is asserted as definitive.
