Merriam-Webster’s second sense is the everyday one — “a date or time before which something must be done” — with a publishing variant, “the time after which copy is not accepted for a particular issue of a publication”. Its first sense is starker: “a line drawn within or around a prison that a prisoner passes at the risk of being shot”. First recorded 1864. The academic sense descends from a word that was once literal.
Merriam-Webster is cited as the dictionary of record: where an entry defines a word rather than a position, a dictionary is the primary source for it. How the term is used in research writing, above, is this lexicon’s own reading.
