Directorate-General for Trade — the European Commission department responsible for EU trade policy and FTA negotiations.
The department has been renamed, and anyone citing the old title is now out of date: it is the “Directorate-General for Trade and Economic Security (DG TRADE)”, which “develops and carries out the Commission’s policies on trade and economic security”. Its stated mission is “to pursue and promote open, rules-based trade between the EU and non-EU countries”, and the Commission puts economic security in the same breath — trade policy is described as helping “to reduce our economic dependencies on non-EU countries and to prevent disruption to global supply chains”. That framing is the substantive change, not merely a new nameplate: the department that negotiates market access is the same one now charged with dependency reduction. As of the page consulted, the responsible Commissioner is Maroš Šefčovič and the Director-General is Ditte Juul Jørgensen. Its operational site is the Access2Markets family at policy.trade.ec.europa.eu.
