A structured body of language through which meaning is produced; in Foucauldian terms, a system of statements that constructs knowledge within a domain.
Merriam-Webster runs from the everyday to the technical: “verbal interchange of ideas”; “connected speech or writing longer than a sentence”; and, the sense social science uses, “a mode of organizing knowledge, ideas, or experience that is rooted in language and its concrete contexts”. From Latin discurrere, to run off in different directions. First recorded in the fifteenth century. Which sense is meant changes the claim entirely — the third makes discourse a structure that shapes what can be said, not merely something said.
Merriam-Webster is cited as the dictionary of record: where an entry defines a word rather than a position, a dictionary is the primary source for it. The research usage described above is this lexicon’s own reading.
