The DOI Foundation defines the identifier broadly — “A DOI is a digital identifier of an object, any object — physical, digital, or abstract” — and the system is standardised as ISO 26324, Digital Object Identifier System, approved in November 2010 and published in May 2012. Resolution is the act the DOI system performs: it looks up the identifier and redirects to the object’s current location, which is why a DOI outlives a changed URL. The specific method this entry describes — retrieving metadata through the Crossref API — is Crossref’s service, not part of the DOI Foundation’s definition, and is not sourced on this page.
